HOT SPOT: COMMONWEALTH CAFÉ //

It didn’t take long for the downtown Birmingham crowd to discover the new kid on the Hamilton Row block. The sleek, contemporary setting put together by proprietors James Hayosh and Hubert Yaro (of Royal Oak’s Ronin) is just right for the small menu of sandwiches, salads, and pastries from top-quality — and often local — ingredients, and coffee made to order from the grinding of beans from Ethiopia and Costa Rica to the drip into outsized white cups. Garage-door style windows on two sides will open onto the street as soon as weather permits.
