In Full Bloom

Dow Gardens boasts year-round beauty and sculpted scenery.

Published:

Herbert H. Dow started Dow Gardens in 1899 on 8 acres of flat, sandy land in Midland. Over the years, the Dow Chemical Co. founder’s family expanded Dow Gardens and it now encompasses over 110 acres of land under the care of the Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation.

Seven gardens, each with a unique theme, are decorated with sculptures, streams, bridges, and more. The Dow family estate (The Pines) is viewable from the porch, but visitors can schedule a short, guided tour of the interior. During the summer and winter, the Gardens host a sculpture exhibition as well as seasonal exhibits in the glass-walled conservatory. Just a short drive from Dow Gardens, the Whiting Forest contains a 30-foot viewing tower and more than 2 miles of pathway.

Photography is welcomed and encouraged. Guests can bring lunch to eat at picnic tables on the grounds. Beverages are available in the gift shop.
