Stay home this Labor Day weekend and enjoy one of the area’s biggest local events — the Detroit Jazz Festival. From Hart Plaza to Campus Martius, the 2013 festival will span several city blocks in downtown Detroit and offer a talented lineup for concert-goers. The three-day event is now in its 34th year and is the largest free jazz festival in the world.
This year’s event — Aug. 30 through Sept. 2 — is bigger than ever. Four stages will be filled with a lineup that boasts jazz legends such as Grammy award-winning pianist Danilo Perez, David Murray Big Band with Macy Gray, the McCoy Tyner Trio with special guest Savion Glover, and the Yellowjackets, just to name a few.
The Festival makes a significant economic impact on the city of Detroit — more than 25 percent of attendees come from outside of Michigan.
“We strive to make the Detroit Jazz Festival’s Labor Day weekend concerts more exceptional every year, and continue to show people from around the world what our great city has to offer,” says Gretchen Valade, chair of the Detroit Jazz Festival Foundation board of directors. “Everything we do at the Detroit Jazz Festival is meant to enrich the lives of music lovers everywhere. We want to make it possible for them to see their favorite jazz artists all in one place, and most importantly, offering these performances for free.”
The Detroit Jazz Festival also provides year-round concerts and educational programming. If you can’t make it Labor Day, mark your calendar for Saturday, November 2, when the Detroit Jazz Festival Community Series presents a unique event. Wayne Shorter and Esperanza Spalding will perform a piece commissioned by the Detroit Jazz Festival.
