Tour Of Palmer Park & Historic Palmer Park Apartment District

Date

Oct 6, 2012
11:00 am until 3:00 pm

Description

Join People for Palmer Park for a historic architecture tour. Proceeds will benefit the revitalization of Palmer Park.

This guided walking tour (shuttle bus available) explores the history of Palmer Park, including the Log Cabin, Spanish Bell and Merrill Palmer Fountain, and the history and artistry of the adjacent National Historic Register apartment district.

Once the epitome of grandeur, the district includes the work of some of Detroit’s best architects. Built between 1924 and the 1950s, the apartmen

ts reflect exotic architecture in the Egyptian, Spanish, Venetian, Moorish, Tudor and Mediterranean styles, as well as Art Moderne and Georgian. We are excited that tour-goers this year can view the interior of a gorgeous and spacious apartment in Albert Kahn’s 1001 Covington, one of the apartments in the newly renovated La Vogue, the lobby of The Luxor, and catch a glimpse of the other eight apartments undergoing complete renovation. This is an exciting area of re-birth and preservation.

If you would like to volunteer as a tour guide or docent, please contact info@peopleforpalmerpark.org.

The tour begins every 15 minutes from Unity Temple in the apartment district, and takes approximately two hours. The last tour will leave at 3 pm.
