Motor City Wine

Motor City Wine

The speakeasy feeling at this one-flight-up haven in downtown Detroit is quite apt; at one time, the space did house an illegal drinking spot.

Everything is above board, now, but the aura of intrigue remains. Mark Szymanski and sommelier David Armin-Parcells’ unpretentious shop (above Foran’s) dedicated to wines from small producers is drawing a mini-crowd (it holds just 60, with seating for 50) for tastings and what the proprietor calls wine snacks: cheese, cured meats, and olives. Wines are available by the glass, but the best deals are bottles, with only a $5 corkage fee for those who want to sit back and enjoy the atmosphere. 608 Woodward, Detroit; 313-483-7283, motorcitywine.com.

Regular hours: 11:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Mon.-Fri., and noon-5 p.m. Sat., which are being expanded for the holiday season.
