Holiday Giving: Children's Charities

There are few more heartbreaking thoughts than imagining a child with nothing under the tree on Christmas morning. Help make the holidays merry and bright for little ones by donating to these charities

The Old Newsboys’ Goodfellows Fund

The Old Newsboys’ Goodfellows Fund of Detroit is a 95-year-old charity dedicated to ensuring there’s “no kiddie without a Christmas.” During the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday season, they distribute gift boxes, including toys, books, and warm clothing to children between  the ages of 4 and 13 in Detroit, Hamtramck, and Highland Park. Goodfellows take to Detroit streets beginning the Monday after Thanksgiving and accept donations until Christmas Eve. Proceeds from the purchase of their newspapers go to the holiday-gift program. Toys for Tots

The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program is a nonprofit public charity that provides funding and support for annual toy collection and distribution. New, unwrapped toys are accepted up to Dec. 23. For drop-off sites and information: >> > toysfortots.org.

Salvation Army

Red Kettle season for the Salvation Army was started by Capt. Joseph McFee in 1901. Money collected in the familiar kettles goes toward the purchase of toys, clothing, warm meals, and other goods for the needy. To find a red kettle or for other information: >> > salvationarmyusa.org.

Children’s Hospital of Michigan

Recognizing that fun can be as essential to recovery as medicine, Children’s Hospital of Michigan operates The Child Life Toy Fund to help relieve stress in young patients. The Children’s Center of Detroit

The Children’s Center of Detroit helps youngsters and families in need. The Santa Toy Shop gives underprivileged families an opportunity to shop on behalf of their children. Donated gifts should be new and unwrapped. Send donations to The Children’s Center of Wayne County, 79 W. Alexandrine, Detroit. Financial contributions may be made online: >> > thechildrenscenter.com/donate.

Alternatives for Girls

Since 1985, Alternatives for Girls has worked to prevent violence, teen pregnancy, and exploitation against at-risk and homeless girls ages 4 to 20. Alternatives helps girls find shelter, get educated, and obtain the tools necessary to live independently. Toys are emphasized during the Christmas season for younger residents. Personal items, clothing, and other goods are also appreciated. Donations and contributions: Alternatives for Girls, 903 W. Grand Blvd., Detroit; >> > alternativesforgirls.org.

Bottomless Toy Chest

Mickey Guisewite founded the Bottomless Toy Chest shortly after her son was diagnosed with leukemia and she realized other sick children had no one to comfort them in the hospital and no toys to help pass the time. New, unwrapped toys may be dropped off all year at Adventures in Toys, 250 W. Maple, Birmingham. For information or to make a monetary donation: >> > bottomlesstoychest.org.
