Give Yourself the Gift of a Beautiful Smile

Are you self-conscious about your crooked teeth, or do you wish your gums weren’t so gummy? Don’t hide your smile. Advances in dentistry have made treatments faster, safer, easier, and more comfortable. Today, innovative alternatives to traditional braces can turn crowded teeth into a straighter smile in as little as a few months. With cosmetic periodontal surgery, gums can be sculpted or lengthened for a smile that’s more youthful and balanced. Replacing missing teeth with natural-looking implants will improve your overall quality of life, as you can speak, chew, laugh, and smile with greater comfort and confidence.

Feeling embarrassed about your smile is just one reason to visit the dentist sooner than your next checkup. Take action if you grind your teeth, if you snore loudly or make gasping sounds at night, if you experience pain or swelling in your face or mouth, hear pops or feel pain when your jaw moves, or have trouble chewing or swallowing. A beautiful smile starts with a healthy mouth. Is it time to see your dentist?

Q: I’m too vain to spend years in braces. Four months — I can do that! Can I really have my teeth straightened in only 20 weeks?

A: If you’re looking for a speedier way to straighten your teeth, Fastbraces can be the solution for a more beautiful smile in just weeks or months, rather than years. Drs. Craig and Marcy Goldin, of the award winning Cosmetic Dentistry Institute, offer Fastbraces for adults, teens, and children.

“Unlike traditional braces, Fastbraces have triangular brackets that allow the roots of your teeth to move toward their fi nal position, starting from the very fi rst day of treatment. Because the treatment time is shorter, you’ll spend less time wearing braces and you’ll need fewer offi ce visits,” Dr. Craig Goldin says.

“Once the braces come off, you typically wear retainers for only 15-20 minutes a day,” adds Dr. Marcy Goldin. “Having straight teeth improves your smile, your bite, your overall dental health, and your self-confidence — especially for people who have avoided traditional orthodontic treatment. Fastbraces is a life-changing alternative. It’s quicker, more comfortable, and more convenient.”

Fastbraces are also available with aesthetically pleasing clear ceramic brackets and a tooth-colored wire. The Cosmetic Dentistry Institute provides Fastbraces and other state-of-the-art techniques including porcelain veneers, in-office whitening, and natural-looking dental implants to create the perfect smile you’ve always wanted.

“We restore health, function, and beauty,” Dr. Craig Goldin says. “We offer many options to our patients.”

Q: I have the worst teeth ever. Is there anything that can be done to fix my worn-down smile?

A: Over time, teeth can chip, wear, fracture, or shift. Grinding your teeth or having ongoing headache, jaw, or muscle pain could be signs that your bite is uneven. But your smile isn’t beyond help. Through rehabilitation dentistry, Dr. Mitchell Milan can restore the mouth to prevent future wear and reverse the hands of time by creating a healthy, beautiful, and functional smile.

“We thoroughly analyze the current state of the patient’s mouth. Each patient is well-informed, and treatment is designed to meet their goals. Good planning is important for making a blueprint of what the fi nal results will be, in order to assure a predictable and successful outcome,” says Dr. Milan, who has specialized training and experience in this advanced form of dentistry.

Using 3-D digital scanning, a model is created showing where the teeth will be positioned. A temporary allows the patient to preview what the work will look like and feel like in their mouth before fi nal restorations are made.

“Typically, we restore the teeth with either crowns or a combination of crowns and implants, if teeth are missing. Gum treatment and/or orthodontic work are sometimes necessary,” Dr. Milan explains. “Generally, patients have full-mouth restoration as we reposition the entire bite — creating balance, harmony, and function."

Joseph R. Nemeth, D.D.S., & Associates

Q: How can you improve a smile with cosmetic periodontal surgery?

A: As some people age, their gums recede, making their teeth look much longer and their smile appear older. Periodontist Dr. Joseph Nemeth uses the minimally invasive Chao Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation Technique to lengthen the gums — typically with no incisions, no stitches, and virtually no pain.

“We make a small pinhole in the gum above the teeth to be treated. With special instruments, we loosen up the gum tissue and bring it down over the receded areas where it should be. The Pinhole Technique improves the smile tremendously. Patients are extremely happy, and we’re seeing excellent long-term results,” says Dr. Nemeth, the first gum specialist in Michigan to be certified in this innovative technique.

Some people are embarrassed because they have a “gummy” smile. Dr. Nemeth does periodontal plastic surgery to sculpt the excess gum tissue so the teeth will look appropriate and beautiful.

“With these procedures, patients have little to no discomfort. We typically use intravenous sedation so patients are asleep or in a very relaxed state during their treatment,” says Dr. Nemeth, who has certification as a Master in the College of Sedation in Dentistry. “We love doing cosmetic periodontal surgery. Our patients enjoy a healthier, more attractive smile, and it changes their life.”

Regiani Holistic Dental Center

Q: What causes gums to recede?

A: You reach a certain age, and suddenly your dental hygienist says you have receding gums. Is this the start of periodontal disease? TV commercials want you to believe a certain product or mouth rinse is the remedy. It’s not that simple.

There are many causes of gum recession. Do you have bacteria, fungus, or a yeast infection? Only a microscopic examination of the plaque around your teeth can answer that question.

Are you using toothpaste with abrasives, such as silica? Check the ingredient list. You can always brush without any toothpaste at all for a few months, to see if that makes a difference.

Maybe your teeth have shifted out of their proper position. Your teeth are designed to slide over each other, not collide against one another. Uneven and constant force can also cause gum recession in one or more areas.

Make sure your dentist or hygienist checks these and other possible causes, along with taking a complete health history. Tell them if you are taking any medications regularly. Only then can you and your dental team determine the right course of treatment. Would you like a second opinion? Call us at 248-625-5222.

Bogrow & Associates Dental Center for Sleep Apnea and Snoring

Q: Is there an alternative to the CPAP for treating snoring and sleep apnea?

A: The American Academy of Sleep Medicine has recommended oral appliance therapy (OAT) for patients who have mild to moderate sleep apnea and cannot tolerate the CPAP.

“Statistically, more than 50 percent of people who try the CPAP stop using it within six months, as the mask can be uncomfortable and claustrophobic,” says Dr. Earl Bogrow, a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine. “Studies show that sleep apnea and sleep deprivation are correlated with harmful disease like diabetes, hypertension, esophageal reflux, and stroke. Managing the condition is essential to one’s health.”

Adjustable, custom-made oral appliances help to maintain an unobstructed airway while sleeping and are covered by medical insurance once a diagnosis of sleep apnea is confirmed.

“I’ve dedicated my practice to treating people with snoring and sleep apnea, says Dr. Bogrow, who himself was successfully treated for the condition with an oral appliance.

“Don’t wait another day to get a good night’s sleep,” he recommends.

Q: What are the signs and symptoms of sleep apnea?

A: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep disorder in which your airway collapses partly or completely while you sleep. The result is a lack of oxygen and frequent nighttime awakenings that have negative consequences for your health – including the risks of high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, depression, pre-diabetes, and diabetes.

Symptoms that indicate you may have OSA include:
• Loud or frequent snoring
• Choking or gasping while you sleep
• Teeth-grinding at night
• Morning headaches
• Daytime sleepiness or fatigue
• Trouble concentrating
• Memory problems
• Acid reflux

These factors can increase your risk: being overweight or hypertensive, being a male over age 40 or with a neck size of 17 inches or more, being a female over age 50 or with a neck size of 16 inches or more, smoking, and drinking alcohol close to bedtime.

OSA is treatable. We’re helping patients with the use of an oral appliance worn at night. If you experience symptoms of OSA, call today to schedule a complimentary OSA risk-assessment appointment with Dr. Mindy Salzberg-Siegel.

Danielson Endodontics

Q: What is the latest treatment to reduce teeth-clenching and grinding?

A: In our office, we’re seeing an increase in the number of patients with facial pain, tooth pain, and fractured teeth due to clenching and grinding (bruxism). We’re using Botox as an alternative or adjunct treatment, to reduce the intensity of muscle contractions that can lead to pain and tooth damage. Botox is injected into the masseter muscles on each side of the jaw, and sometimes in the muscle group at the temples. The injections allow the muscles to relax but still function when needed.

Patients are finding significant relief of their symptoms. The benefits of Botox last three to four months, and injections may be repeated to maintain the life changing results.

Dolores J Baran D.D.S., P.C. & Associates

Q: I’m extremely afraid of going to the dentist. What is the best option to ease my fears and get my dental treatments done?

A: With sleep dentistry, you can be totally relaxed and have most or all of your dental work completed in one visit. Dr. Dolores Baran offers a range of sedation methods, so there’s no reason to put off the treatments you need.

“In our office we provide IV sedation where the patient is asleep — they don’t feel any pain and they don’t remember the experience,” she says. “Another option is nitrous oxide or laughing gas, a minimal sedation that makes you feel calm and comfortable while awake. We also give oral sedation using pills where you aren’t quite fully asleep and you won’t remember the procedure.”

Dr. Baran provides all phases of dentistry and uses advanced technologies like the CEREC CAD/Cam machine, which creates beautiful ceramic restorations in a single office visit. Dr. Baran is the face of Fastbraces and is able to straighten teeth in as little as three months to a year.

“From fillings and root canals to crowns and gum treatments, patients can have everything done here while they’re asleep,” she says.

Pristine Periodontics & Implants

Q: How can implant dentistry change people’s lives?

A: “One of the earliest recollections I have of implants improving a patient’s quality of life was during my implant fellowship in New York City,” Dr. Sayed recalls. “I had just finished my first major implant surgery on a patient who was a chef at a top local restaurant. Immediately after the surgery, I converted his existing removable denture into a fixed unit that he would never have to remove again. I advised him to try out his new teeth and to come back in two weeks. To my surprise, he returned in a few hours with a huge platter of food, noting that all his adult life he had been preparing food for people without ever being able to enjoy it himself. Today, for the first time in years, he was able to smile confidently and savor the simple joy of eating.”

Although Dr. Sayed is a specialist in both the surgical and restorative components of implants, he prefers a team approach, focusing solely on the surgical aspects and working in partnership with his restorative colleagues. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and is committed to using cutting-edge technology to help his patients improve their quality of life.

LakePointe Orthodontics

Q: When is the best time to begin orthodontic treatment?

A: For the majority of children, it is best to wait until most, if not all, the permanent teeth are in. The major advantages of waiting are:
1. Decreased time wearing braces
2. Reduced cost for the patient’s family
3. Better cooperation with a more mature child

There are times, though, that it’s beneficial to treat early. These include:
1. Crossbites and underbites
2. Space gaining due to the early loss of primary teeth
3. Severely misaligned teeth that are causing emotional distress

We prefer to examine patients at age 7 to 8, and most times we find that watchful waiting is the best “treatment” during the early years.
