ATWATER IN THE PARK // Fresh from 17 years as chef for The Rattlesnake Club, Chris Franz has moved to a more casual place where traditional German-style beer is the premier beverage. But what a setting: a former church with a soaring ceiling and stained-glass windows. Franz is upgrading ingredients and service, and is making the menu even more beer-compatible with such additions as a platter of local bratwurst and other sausages teamed with house-made red cabbage, spaetzle, and sauerkraut, plus potato pancakes and daily soups. 1175 Lakepointe at Kercheval, Grosse Pointe Park; 313-344-5104; L & D daily. $12

NICK’S 22ND STREET STEAK HOUSE // Affordable steaks have been the premise at this family-owned spot since 1992. While it lacks the slick service of the upscale steakhouse, Nick’s satisfies a taste for red meat in its casual atmosphere with a northern Michigan spin. Angus choice steaks are served at both lunch and dinner, at the same prices, and come with soup or salad and vegetables. Steaks range from the dainty six-ounce filet mignon, to the top-of-the-line Chateaubriand for two.
