According to a survey conducted by the American Dental Association Health Policy Institute, many adults over the age of 18 experience a range of health and social problems due to the condition of their mouth and teeth. Nearly a third of those surveyed feel pain and have difficulty biting and chewing. One in four people say they avoid smiling, and one in five indicate they experience anxiety. Problems arising from an unsightly smile include difficulty sleeping, speech issues, a reduction in their social activities, and a reluctance to interview for a job.

Metro Detroit dental professionals make smiling easy. Utilizing leading-edge technologies, state-of-the-art materials, and advanced techniques, dentists can improve the health of your mouth and create a more youthful and attractive smile, giving a boost to your self-esteem and confidence. Under the care of local professionals, it’s easy to revitalize your smile with tooth-whitening, computer-designed one-day crowns, minimally invasive gum rejuvenation, dental implants and implant bridges, porcelain veneers, and alternatives to traditional braces. If you avoid the dentist because you’re afraid, know that pain-free treatments and a variety of sedation methods make it possible to achieve the smile of your dreams in complete comfort.

Q: I’m extremely nervous and afraid to go to the dentist, but I need fillings and a crown. What options can make me feel more comfortable?

A: With sleep dentistry, you can put aside your fears and be totally relaxed while most or all of your dental work is completed in just one visit. Dr. Dolores Baran offers a range of sedation options, so there’s no reason to put off the treatments you need.

“We provide IV sedation where the patient is very relaxed in a twilight sleep. They don’t feel any pain or remember the experience,” she explains. “Another option is nitrous oxide, or laughing gas. It’s a minimal sedation that makes you feel calm and comfortable while awake. We discuss all sedation options and tailor the approach to the patient’s needs.”

Dr. Baran and her associates off er all phases of cosmetic dentistry, including implants, crowns, veneers, and Fastbraces. “With the CEREC machine, we can create same-day crowns,” she says. “There are no messy impressions taken and no need to wear painful temporaries. CEREC is a fast, easy, and precise way to restore your smile.”

Q: What are the symptoms and risks of sleep-disordered breathing?

A: Sleep-disordered breathing is a serious condition that impairs your breathing while you sleep. The most common type of sleep-disordered breathing, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), is characterized by the recurring collapse of soft tissues in the throat, resulting in a narrowed or closed upper airway.

Symptoms that indicate you may have sleep-disordered breathing include:

  • Snoring
  • Choking or gasping sounds while asleep
  • Breathing through your mouth
  • Pauses in breathing
  • Repeated nighttime awakenings
  • Daytime fatigue or sleepiness
  • Frequent morning headaches
  • Concentration and memory problems, and
  • Depression and anxiety.

Sleep-disordered breathing reduces air flow and blood oxygen levels. It can be a cause of workplace or automobile accidents and poor performance at work or at school. Adverse health risks include:

  • High blood pressure
  • Blood clots
  • Heart failure and heart attack
  • Stroke, and
  • Diabetes.

Factors that may increase your risk for sleep-disordered breathing include obesity, a thick neck, a thick soft palate, enlarged tonsils and adenoids, a large tongue, a deviated septum, or allergies. Your risk also increases if you are a man, an older adult, have a family history of a sleep disorder, overuse alcohol or sedatives, or if you smoke.

Men, women, and children can suffer from sleep-disordered breathing. Treatment may include surgery, a CPAP (continuous positive airway) machine, or a custom-fitted oral appliance.

If you have questions or concerns regarding sleep-disordered breathing, call for a consultation with Dr. Mindy Salzberg-Siegel.

Q: Can physical therapy help my TMJ pain?

A: When treating TMJ (temporomandibular joint syndrome), the specially trained physical therapists at Team Rehab will analyze a patient’s posture, look for dysfunctions in the patient’s neck, and examine the range of motion of the jaw to detect where the TMJ stems from and to develop an individualized program of treatment for each patient.

Physical therapy treatments may include ultrasound, moist heat, ice, stretching, and exercises that help improve posture and muscle strength. Manual therapy can also be used to relax the muscles of the neck and face, relieving any stiffness in the muscles of the jaw and neck. Physical therapists may also work on the muscle structures inside the mouth, to move the temporomandibular joint out of a compressed state and into a painless state of rest. Team Rehab therapists can ease your TMJ pain.

Q: Is there a minimally invasive procedure to correct receding gums?

A: With the Chao Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation Technique, receding gums are typically treated with no cutting, no stitches, and virtually no pain. Periodontist Dr. Joseph Nemeth was the first gum specialist in Michigan to be certified in the use of this minimally invasive technique by its originator and developer, Dr. John Chao.

“When gums recede, your teeth look much longer and your smile looks older. This condition also can lead to tooth sensitivity, decay, and bone loss,” Dr. Nemeth explains. “Using the Pinhole Technique, we make a small pinhole in the gum above the teeth to be treated. With special instruments, we loosen up the gum tissue and bring it down over the receded areas where it should be. This improves the smile tremendously and prevents further gum and bone recession and loss.”

Dr. Nemeth places platelet rich fibrin (PRF) through the pinhole. A membrane derived from the patient’s own blood, PRF increases the blood supply in the gums, speeds healing, and further enhances the result.

The Pinhole Technique offers many advantages over traditional gum grafting, including no incisions or sutures, less discomfort, and a faster recovery, Dr. Nemeth says. “It’s a great technique. Patients do well and are extremely happy to have a healthier, more attractive smile.”
