Liana Aghajanian

Liana Aghajanian was born in Iran and raised in California, and is a journalist who explores the issues, people, and places on the fringes of society. Her work has appeared in the New York Times, The Guardian, Newsweek, Rolling Stone, and Al Jazeera America. In 2015, she was awarded the second Write A House permanent writing residency, and now writes and lives in Detroit. Read Aghajanian’s story about growing up celebrating Christmas twice a year on page 50.

CJ Benninger

CJ Benninger is a Bloomfield Hills-based freelance photographer who specializes in portraits and products. When he’s not wrangling his three “incredibly adorable, yet very wild,” young children, you’ll likely find him shooting for any of Hour Media’s many publications — this month, he photographed organizational tools for our monthly A-List feature on page 27, and The Players Detroit on page 37 — or his other clients such as Campbell Ewald, Organic, and Car & Driver.

Brittany Hutson

Brittany Hutson is a freelance writer making her Hour Detroit debut this month. On page 49, Hutson reviews Detroit Soul’s Southern comfort food with a healthy twist. A native of Long Island, New York, she moved to Detroit three years ago. Her writing has appeared in Black Enterprise, Essence, The Wall Street Journal, Tostada Magazine, Edible Brooklyn, and Eater Detroit. She is now a food journalism fellow under a collaboration between WDET and journalism training organization Feet in 2 Worlds.

James Yang

James Yang has won more than 250 awards for design and illustration excellence. He is a regular contributor to DBusiness magazine, an Hour Media publication, and has published his artwork in trade publications such as American Illustration and Communication Arts. Yang, who created an illustration that represents the culture of comparison shaped in part by social media on page 40, lives in Brooklyn. His children’s book, Bus! Stop!, was published earlier this year, and his wallpaper for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority can now be seen on New York City trains.
