Meadow Brook Theatre, Michigan’s largest non-profit professional theater, opens its 45th anniversary season on Oct. 6 with Dracula: A Rock Opera. Detroit Tiger Center Fielder Austin Jackson

In less than six short summer months, Austin Jackson, the rookie center fielder for the Detroit Tigers, has accomplished a feat that seemed inconceivable when he was acquired last Dec. 8 in the three-team trade that sent Curtis Granderson to the New York Yankees. Oh, and in the meantime, he released two buzz-worthy mix-tapes of synthy dance pop, played sold-out college campuses across the country, and inked a major label deal with J Records (Sony/RCA) — all before walking at commencement. Between shows, which include a set at Bonnaroo and all 43 dates of the 2010 Vans Warped Tour, the singer/songwriter/producer is working on his forthcoming debut album. The new grad paused while recording recently at a New York City studio to chat about his music, schoolwork, and “doing it all for The Mitten.”

A Bit of Britain

A Bit of Britain

Six friends from England bought six plane tickets to visit a grad-school chum in Detroit — a trans-Atlantic excursion with two goals: Hang out with the guy with whom they’d spent many a drunken night while studying in England, and, maybe more important, check out their pal’s English-style pub in the basement of his southwest Detroit home.
