Located at the spot that had been Cousins Heritage Inn, this bright and colorful restaurant serves vibrant, interesting, and well-prepared eclectic American cooking by Douglas Hewitt Jr. An extensive renovation in 2006 gutted the second floor to create a dramatic two-story main entry area and large bar. The old dining room and the building’s Arts and Crafts design and feel stayed. Try Hewitt’s version of calamari done Mexican style in a crisp tortilla shell with roasted corn and beans, and a spicy rémoulade. His charcuterie is not to be missed, and his single braised short rib is among the best around the metro area. His version of a Po’ Boy sandwich — smoked duck breast, goat cheese, smoky red peppers, arugula, and red onion on a baguette with an orange gastrique sauce — will amaze. D Tue.-Sat.
