Earlier this month, the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center (BBAC) ushered in spring with a lineup of new exhibits. Visitors can now stop by the nonprofit art center to see Brian Rutenberg: Pine, Palm & River, Frank James Fisher: Pop Artifacts, J.A. Richard: Hope in Miniature, and the Students of Edward Duff, which are on display through April 22.

The Brian Rutenberg exhibit features the work of the New York-based artist, a Fulbright Scholar who BBAC says has been called one of the finest American painters of his generation. Rutenberg’s abstract paintings have been included in collections at the Yale University Art Gallery, Bronx Museum of Art, South Carolina State Museum, and more. The showcase is his first exhibit with BBAC, and it will feature his large-scale works.

“This is a must-see, exceptional exhibit,” says Annie VanGelderen, BBAC president and CEO, in a press release.  “Truly, all of our spring exhibiting artists are particularly wonderful in their own mediums.  Visitors will certainly leave inspired.”

Other spring exhibits at BBAC feature the work of Frank James Fisher, a Milford-based ceramic artist whose work is influenced by the graphic design principles he learned while working in advertising, and J.A. Richards, an Ann Arbor printmaker, painter, and photographer who creates tiny pieces of art. Artists who studied under Edward Duff — a member of the BBAC faculty, the Oil Painters of America, and the National Oil & Acrylic Painters’ Society — are also showing their paintings.

The nonprofit art center, located at 1516 S. Cranbrook Road in Birmingham, is open Monday through Saturday. Guests must wear masks while in the space, and social distancing is required.
