The Detroit Historical Society will honor Dr. Nikolai Vitti, superintendent of the Detroit Public Schools Community District, and Dr. Mark Schlissel, president of the University of Michigan, with its inaugural Moving Forward Awards on Dec. 9. The awards will be presented at this year’s Society Ball and feature comments by the honorees. The Moving Forward Awards build upon the Society’s theme of “Looking Back to Move Forward” and honors people who are making history in Detroit. Aligned with the Society’s focus on funding its educational initiatives, this year’s awards honor two dedicated community leaders who are making history with transformational programs that help students in Detroit and across the region. Each year, the Detroit Historical Society’s holiday ball raises funds for educational initiatives at the Detroit Historical Museum and the Dossin Great Lakes Museum.
