Imerman Angels, a 1-on-1 cancer support organization with headquarters in Chicago, is proud to announce the launch of its first chapter in Michigan, led by suburban Detroit resident and newly named Michigan Regional Director, Duffy Wineman.
Launched in Chicago in 2006 by Detroit native and testicular cancer survivor Jonny Imerman Imerman Angels provides 1-on-1 peer support to cancer fighters, survivors and caregivers. Through a personalized matching process, cancer fighters or caregivers are connected with someone who has experienced a similar cancer situation (a Mentor Angel).
While each cancer experience is unique, Mentor Angels are matched by similar age, gender, and cancer type, giving fighters and caregivers the chance to ask personal questions and receive support from a peer who is intimately familiar with the situation.
Imerman Angels’ services are completely free and information is kept confidential. Imerman Angels continues to grow the world's largest database of Mentor Angels, having helped more than 7,800 cancer patients and 2,200 caregivers across all 50 states and around the globe.
Wineman has an expansive background in charitable outreach and fundraising having worked for organizations including the Academy of the Sacred Heart, and the John H. Wineman Education and Research Fund in Radiation Oncology, University of Michigan. Wineman comments:
"Cancer touches all of us. It touched me in the most personal way when I lost my (first) husband of 27 years to bone cancer. Imerman Angels is giving me an opportunity to bring their hopeful and sustaining message to my hometown.”
Doctor Theodore Lawrence, professor and chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Michigan, says:
“Imerman Angels’ mission to enable 1-on-1 cancer support is a unique resource in the Detroit community. These connections provide people going through treatment with support from those who have gone through this before, which can take the fear and uncertainty out of the cancer journey. I welcome Imerman Angels to Michigan.”
