Take Steps to Live a Healthy Life

It’s easy to skip the gym, use your lunch hour to run errands, pick up fast food, and bring work home with you from the office — a project you can get to after the PTA meeting or once the kids are asleep. Perpetually busy, women tend to put the needs of their children, spouse, and job ahead of their own. But a lifestyle that is controlling you and is “light” in healthy measures can take its toll, zapping your energy and replacing it with stress and chronic disease.

Taking even small steps to make healthy lifestyle choices will go a long way toward overcoming this problem. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend eating a balanced diet — including a variety of fruits, veggies, and whole grains — to help maintain a healthy weight. Just 30 minutes of physical activity at least five days a week can help reduce high blood pressure and arthritis pain, and alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety. Resolve to stop smoking, take time to rest and manage stress, and find out what preventive health screening exams, tests, and shots you need — and when you should get them.

You don’t have to step up to a healthier lifestyle alone. Metro Detroit medical professionals have customized programs to help you lose weight, detox your body, rejuvenate your skin, and prevent hair loss. Healthy lifestyle choices work hand-in-hand with advanced therapies to alleviate back pain and neck pain, reduce the joint and muscular pain of fibromyalgia, and halt the progression of osteoporosis.

Make today the start of your healthier life.

Dr. Myra Danish

“A full face-lift is extensive surgery that involves the face below the eyelids, as well as the jawline and neck. It gives the best result possible,” says facial plastic surgeon Dr. Myra Danish, M.D., F.A.C.S.

“Generally, a full face-lift is recommended if you have a lot of hanging skin in the mid-portion of the neck, you have heavy jowls, and your neck doesn’t have a sharp angle under the chin,” she explains. “A mini-lift is a short version of a face-lift and is recommended for people who have early signs of aging with minimal jowling and looseness in the neck. Both surgeries are ideal for the appropriate candidates.”

Michigan Hair & Skin Center

Hair-thinning in men is almost exclusively due to male pattern baldness, which is genetic.

In women, high levels of stress and hormonal changes (common during menopause and after pregnancy) have the biggest impact. Because hair loss is often thought of as a man’s problem, women who are losing their hair often find the experience to be traumatic.

What can you do to stop the shedding? A program of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) is the natural, noninvasive, painless solution.

“Light energy from our state-of-the-art machines safely clears away buildups of the chemical DHT that can clog hair follicles,” says Carol Wagner, owner of Michigan Hair & Skin Center. “The laser increases blood flow to the scalp so that active hair follicles can receive the nutrients needed to regrow hair without drugs, implant surgery, and other invasive treatment. Laser therapy not only stimulates the growth of new hair, it makes all hair strands — even thin, weak, and sun-damaged hair — thicker and healthier.”

During a one-year, all-inclusive program, clients receive vitamin-rich hair products that cleanse and nourish the scalp and promote growth in problem areas.

“We have a natural follicle stimulant that helps to re-grow hair without lifetime use,” Wagner says. “For people who are too busy to come in for weekly treatment sessions, we offer at-home remedies to help you keep your hair on your head.”

Oakland MRI

Every two minutes, a woman in the United States is diagnosed with breast cancer. However, when breast cancer is detected at a localized stage, before it has spread to the lymph nodes, the chances of a five-year survival rate are as much as 98 percent. This is why it is so important to detect breast cancer in its earliest stages. One of the best methods is through screening mammography. According to the FDA, the accuracy of mammography breast cancer detection can be significantly improved by using a Computer Aided Detection system (CAD).

To improve on this detection rate, many professionals believe women with a strong family history of breast cancer, a personal history of breast cancer, or a history of radiation to the chest should undergo yearly breast-screening MRI exams. Some physicians also advocate that women with dense breast tissue should undergo breast MRI screening, to help in the early detection of cancer.

The latest innovation, the Invivo DynaCAD system, when combined with breast MRI, helps physicians detect smaller cancers earlier, with greater accuracy. CAD technology assists the radiologist in reviewing thousands of cross-sectional pictures of the breast, and combines them to generate detailed 2-D and 3-D images. Oakland MRI has recently acquired this system and is now extending the reach of breast imaging, allowing the radiologist to differentiate between benign and malignant lesions, as well as detecting cancer earlier using noninvasive techniques.

Spa Renaissance

Everybody has a different skin type, so the first step in making sure your skin is at its best is to have a skin evaluation to help determine how aggressive any treatment should be — from conservative options using topical lotions, to more aggressive therapies utilizing a laser or peels.

“We always try to keep people on a skin maintenance program,” says board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. William Stefani. “What we try to do first is to treat everyone conservatively. Most people go on a program of retinoids and moisturizers. Sometimes a bleaching cream is added. We’ll step up to a glycolic acid cleanser and then progress from there. The goal is to uphold some sort of repetition of care that will maintain your skin for years.”

Maintaining healthy skin may include the use of anti-oxidants and exfoliants, to help decrease or remove pre-cancerous lesions and to promote collagen growth. “Continually renewing your skin cells is one way to decrease your risk of skin cancer,” Dr. Stefani says.

People who have aging skin, including “sun-worshippers,” can improve the health of their skin by staying out of the sun and dedicating themselves to a skin maintenance program.

“We may be more aggressive with the laser, whether it’s ActiveFX or a C02 laser or photo therapy with IPL. Those are all good treatments to help with pigmentation changes, wrinkles, and brown spots,” Dr. Stefani explains.

“Unfortunately, we see a lot of skin cancer in Michigan,” he adds. “Tanning and burning in the sun over the years adds up.”

Osteoporosis affects mostly postmenopausal women, and it can have devastating effects. At Pilates Fitness Evolution, Ron Jegadeesh, P.T., M.B.A., works with women to lessen bone loss through Pilates-based physical therapy.

“I have seen women with osteoporosis make remarkable changes in their body after four months of Pilates,” he says.

Osteoporosis mainly affects the spinal vertebrae, hips, and wrists, but Pilates-based bone-building exercises and spinal stabilization have been successful in halting the progression of the disease.

“Pilates is often a permanently effective tool because it strengthens the entire body and its core musculature,” Jegadeesh says.

An early diagnosis is vital to ensuring that treatment will be most effective.

DeClaire Knee & Orthopaedic Institute

A major development in women’s health, from an orthopedic injury perspective, has been an increase in the prevalence of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries. Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Jeffrey H. DeClaire explains why women may be more prone to this common ligament injury: “One factor is the increasing number of women participating in athletics, especially high-level competitive sports like soccer, volleyball, and basketball,” he says. “Anatomical factors also play a role, as women have a little more ‘knock-knee’ alignment. Also, research has demonstrated the possibility that hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle can cause the knee joint to be more vulnerable to injury.”

Preventing knee injuries in the female athlete includes strength training and conditioning, Dr. DeClaire says.

“Another preventive measure is to re-evaluate the biomechanics of gait and running, and to train the athlete to function in a way that puts the knee at less risk from injury when they plant, pivot, and land on their leg from a jump.”

Renew Hair & Skin Center

“Hair wellness starts from the inside. Stick to a healthy diet of nutrient-dense whole foods, with three servings of protein daily,” advises Robin Welford, co-owner of Renew Hair & Skin Center. “If your diet doesn’t supply proper nutrients, make sure to take supplements — including Biotin, a vitamin that promotes cell growth for healthier hair.”

“Look for hair products that are free of parabens and sulfates,” recommends Renew co-owner Suzie Meklir. “Be sure to deep-condition with a hair mask before coloring, and use protective oils to nourish dry hair and to prevent heat damage when using a flat iron.”

For women and men who suffer hair loss and thinning, Renew Hair & Skin Center offers a patented program of vitamin supplements, nourishing hair products, and a plant-based serum that has the ability to regenerate inactive follicle stem cells. The treatment protocol includes noninvasive laser therapy, to create the optimal environment for hair advancement.

“Our program addresses all issues of hair loss, but we are here to help anyone maximize their look and bring damaged hair back to life,” Welford says. “To maintain what you have in a dignified manner, you may need a shorter, more natural cut. We can recommend some great hair technicians.”

“Hair-thinning progresses with aging, so it’s important to find the right products that will work for you,” Meklir says. “We have a styling bar and we provide samples of different products to help you find what you need. We’re constantly looking for the best of the best for our clients.”

Team Rehabilitation Physical Therapy

Bulging discs or disk injuries in the neck are very common. While they frequently cause a great deal of discomfort, some people experience no symptoms, even though they may have MRI images that indicate there are disc problems. If you’re having pain and related symptoms, the good news is that, in the majority of cases, disc problems will respond to physical therapy treatment without the need for surgery or other invasive procedures.

“What we do is assess all the small joints and muscles in the neck and the surrounding area to make sure everything is moving properly,” says Carolyn Duncanson, P.T., O.C.S., C.S.C.S., director/owner of Team Rehabilitation in Rochester Hills. “We can help to facilitate better joint movement and strengthen those small muscles that help to support and stabilize the neck. Often, that can significantly ease the pain.”

Team Rehabilitation therapists emphasize hands-on manual therapy to relieve symptoms, combined with other treatments that may include progressive exercise, postural education, and activity modification. Therapists help identify faulty habits or patterns in a patient’s day-to-day activities that may be contributing to their pain and can be easily changed.

“Our ultimate goal is for you not to need our services anymore. We provide education about the specific condition as it pertains to the patient’s problem, their lifestyle, activities, and goals. We also give them exercises and stretches to do at home, to reinforce the therapies we are doing in the clinic,” Duncanson explains.

“Our treatment programs are customized for the individual patient whether they are sitting at a desk all day, lifting groceries and toddlers in and out of cars, or training for triathlons.”

Noninvasive laser therapy at BlastPain has the power to eliminate or significantly reduce joint pain, muscle pain, chronic pain, and pain related to a number of specific conditions.  John Wharton, wellness coordinator at the BlastPain Troy location, points out three conditions that are more common in women in which laser therapy has produced life-changing results.

“One is fibromyalgia, a disease of completely unknown origin that is becoming more and more prevalent. It causes general fatigue, malaise, an inability to sleep through the night, as well as joint and muscular pain throughout the body,” Wharton explains.

“In addition to that, three times as many women as men experience migraines. More recent studies have shown that patients with migraines exhibit cortical spreading depression, or CSD, characterized by dramatic waves of activity that spread across the surface of the brain. CSD may, in turn, trigger the pain and other symptoms of a migraine.

“A third condition we see is scar tissue pain that some women experience after having a cesarean section. If the scar tissue is more than the body can absorb naturally, the adhesions start to cause a binding effect onto underlying connective tissue — and even muscles and tendons — that can be quite painful,” Wharton says. “We’re getting tremendous results in breaking up scar tissue and alleviating a great deal of pain in women who have this condition.”

Therapeutic laser treatments reduce inflammation and increase blood flow, allowing for quicker healing. If you’re looking for an alternative to prescription drugs, injections, or surgery for pain management, BlastPain’s revolutionary FDA-approved laser therapy is the safe, effective, pain-free choice.

Michigan Head & Neck Institute

Muscles of the head, neck, and jaw shorten when they are sore. When muscles shorten, they pull on whatever they’re attached to — causing balance issues, eye pain, blurred vision, excessive tears, and ear congestion, as well as buzzing or ringing in the ears. When a “Charlie horse” occurs, it can refer pain to other parts of the body such as the mouth, ears, eyes, jaw, neck, and head. When muscles stay tight it can become painful for someone to even turn their head, open their jaw, chew food, talk, etc. When pain exists for three to four months, the brain recognizes that it is now chronic. That can result in emotional and cognitive problems such as depression, irritability, argumentativeness, mood swings, anxiety, confusion, and memory problems.

“TMJ is diagnosable when a doctor knows what to look for,” Dr. Richard Klein explains. There are good reasons why a physician would send patients to someone who is specially trained in TMJ treatments. “I create an inconspicuous, custom TMJ mouthpiece for people that rebalances the jaw, relaxes the muscles, and relieves pain. I treat the TM joint as any doctor would treat other joints, using physical medicine, physical therapy, and sometimes pharmaceuticals.”

Michigan Spine Institute

When back pain disrupts your everyday life, it’s generally best to start with conservative pain management options, as surgery is not always the best solution. Physical therapy, epidural injections, and healthy lifestyle changes — including weight reduction, smoking cessation, and a proper diet — may help to reduce or eliminate your pain.

If pain management techniques are not effective and you are considering surgery, an innovative and minimally invasive surgical procedure called AxialLIF spinal fusion offers excellent results. Dr. Steven Rapp, a board-certified neurosurgeon with the Michigan Spine Institute, performs this surgery through a mere one-inch incision in the patient’s lower back.

“There is virtually no blood loss. This approach produces less discomfort and faster healing, as there is much less cutting through muscle and tissue,” Dr. Rapp explains.

“I believe it’s a safer procedure than traditional surgery, as there is less exposure and anesthesia time.”

AxialLIF spinal fusion is an outpatient procedure. Patients are up and walking the same day, and many return to work in two weeks.

For people who have a chronic pain syndrome or for those whose pain does not resolve with surgery, a dorsal column stimulator may provide relief. “It’s a simple device similar to a cardiac pacemaker,” Dr. Rapp says. “A small electrode is placed in the spinal canal, and it creates a warm massage or vibration in the back and lower extremities. This blocks the pain signal going to the brain.”

The battery-powered stimulator is easily placed underneath the skin. Patients can swim, horseback ride, and enjoy normal daily activities without worrying about pain.

Gina Randhawa, M.D.

“Most people make an effort to eat healthy foods and get some exercise, but losing weight is more complicated than that,” says Dr. Gina Randhawa, a bariatric/internal medicine physician who offers personalized medical weight loss plans that focus on diet, nutrition, exercise, and simple lifestyle changes.

“Weight loss is more than just counting calories. There’s a difference between 100 fat calories and 100 protein calories. There’s a right way of exercising and a wrong way of exercising,” she says. “Putting the patient on a more structured routine makes it easier for them to follow, and they see results they didn’t see before. I’ve never had a patient who did not lose weight.”

Dr. Randhawa says her patients learn valuable information that will help them maintain a healthy weight in the future.

“As much as we want to do it on our own, it always helps if you’re losing weight under supervision and there’s some accountability involved,” Dr. Randhawa says.

Mindy Salzberg-Siegel, D.D.S.

It is important to understand the connection between oral health and your overall health, since problems in your mouth can affect the rest of your body. Not only can gum disease lead to systemic issues; it can ultimately lead to tooth loss. Missing teeth not only mar your smile, but the condition can cause existing teeth to shift — creating an unstable bite and impairing your ability to chew foods and speak properly.

That’s why practicing good oral hygiene at home, in conjunction with scheduling regular professional dental visits, is vital. This combination keeps gums healthy and lessens the impact of periodontal disease on the severity of cardiovascular disease, low-birth-weight babies, premature births, and many other conditions.

Creating an attractive smile isn’t only for cosmetic purposes — it is an important step in sustaining your health, for you and for those who count on you.
