Best Bets for January

Tree Time //   With WeWood precision wooden timepieces, planting trees just became chic. For each Miyota-movement watch sold, the company plants a tree through the non-profit American Forests. The watches, made of 100-percent salvaged wood (unused flooring scraps), come in a variety of color combinations. Choose from four wood types. $119-$125, at Wooden Hangers, Royal Oak; 313-218-4941, Fly Mode, Oak Park; 248-227-6715, and Flo Boutique, Detroit; 313-831-4901.

Soundtracks //   Movie soundtracks are often dismissed as “background” music. But well-crafted film music can stand on its own. Back in the ’70s, conductor Charles Gerhardt recorded several LPs with the National Philharmonic Orchestra on RCA Red Seal. Now, that Classic Film Scores series, which includes Korngold’s sweeping score from The Sea Hawk (pictured), is available on CD from Sony Masterworks, remastered and with original liner notes. $9.98 each.

Toothsome //   Some people believe toothpaste has to be gritty to be effective. However, the new chemical-free Dentisse Natural Reflection paste is creamy and smooth, but it polishes teeth and leaves them with a silky feeling — sort of like an ice rink post-Zamboni. The secret is kaolin, a natural clay that’s highly purified. And we like the burst of “Radiant Mint” flavor, which is derived from pure peppermint oil. $16.99/tube;

Green Beauty //   Green Beauty Recipes, by holistic nutritionist Julie Gabriel, offers 250 recipes for making your own cosmetics and hair and body-care products sans potentially harmful chemicals. Learn what vegetable oils, herbs, floral waters, and other ingredients work well with your skin while saving money and avoiding artificial ingredients. $11.05;

Niacin //  “Feeding your face” has a bad connotation. But that’s what skin-care experts advise. Among the important nutrients for a healthy complexion is niacin. Now, we’re being advised to wear our B-3 vitamins. NIA 24’s niacin-based products promise to spur skin repair and counteract UV exposure. We tried the Skin Strengthening Complex and found that it leaves skin supple and bright. $85/1.7 fluid ounces, through plastic surgeons and dermatologists;

Strike Oil //   Maple Road in Birmingham offers plenty of options for fine dressing. Now there’s another — albeit dressing of a different sort: the Old World Olive Press. This is the third location for the olive oil and vinegar boutique, which also has shops in Plymouth and Rockwood. Olive oils include varieties infused with chipotle pepper, Meyer lemon, and blood orange. Look for balsamic vinegars flavored with blueberry and fig. Information:
