The Last Word
Since the Detroit Athletic Club building on Madison Avenue turns 100 this year, we thought we’d raise a glass in its honor. And what better drink to quaff than one invented at the venerable club in the Prohibition era? According to legend, vaudevillian Fred Fogarty introduced “The Last Word” to the DAC in the early 1920s. You can still get this gin-based delight at the iconic private club, but if you’re not a member (or fortunate enough to be invited by a member), you can also order one at the Oakland Art Novelty Co. in Ferndale.
¾ ounce gin
¾ ounce green Chartreuse
¾ ounce maraschino liqueur (like Luxardo)
¾ ounce fresh lime juice
Pour ingredients into ice-filled cocktail shaker. Shake and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. No garnish.
