Fighting Back: Take Control of Your Care

If you don’t have back pain, consider yourself lucky. An estimated 31 million Americans suffer from low-back pain at any given time, according to the American Chiropractic Association (ACA). It’s the leading cause of workplace disability, yet most back pain is mechanical and not caused by a disease, infection, or fracture.

Almost everyone knows someone who’s been to a chiropractor for back pain, but too often, patients can be lured away from conservative treatments with the promise of freedom from back pain via spinal fusion or painkillers.

The ACA notes that spinal fusion surgery has increased six-fold in the past 20 years, even when known medical guidelines emphasize exercise, physical therapy, or chiropractic or acupuncture care. Rather than relying on surgery or medications, a chiropractor uses a spinal adjustment or manipulation to try to restore normal nerve function so the body can heal itself. Chiropractors treat individuals for headaches, joint pain, neck pain, low-back pain, and sciatica. They also treat osteoarthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, sprains and strains, and a variety of other non-neuromusculoskeletal conditions. Today, many health care plans offer reimbursement for wellness and chiropractic services.

The education and training chiropractors receive is similar in many ways to the course of study followed by allopathic (M.D.) and osteopathic (D.O.) doctors, but chiropractors use no medicines or surgery. A chiropractor may use massage, mobilization, heat, cold, ultrasound, light (e.g., infrared), water, traction, decompression, taping, and rehabilitative exercises, in addition to low-velocity or high-velocity manipulations or adjustments of the spine. Chiropractors are increasingly in practice with or working in consultation with M.D.s or D.O.s who specialize in neurosurgery, orthopedics, and physical medicine and rehabilitation.
