Bobby Megargle and Mary Belloni

Their stylish menus are enticing enough to attract a loyal clientele of discriminating diners, but no matter how expert they are, restaurant people like to take a break from their own kitchens for a taste of someone else’s cooking

Bobby Megargle spends much of his time as the on-site proprietor overseeing the Spa1924grille at the Westin Book Cadillac, but when he gets away, it’s often because of his craving for the lamb chops at Mosaic in Greektown. “The chops are a must-try and my worst vice,” he says. Another of his haunts is the Town Tavern in Royal Oak, where he likes to eat at the bar. “Comfortable bar, comfortable staff, and surprisingly good food,” is his review. “My favorite two dishes are the meatloaf and mashed potatoes, and lobster mac-and-cheese. I get both every time I go.”

Downtown’s venerable Caucus Club seems almost unchanged under proprietor Mary Belloni, who quietly keeps it viable. When she wants an evening away from the restaurant on the ground floor of the Penobscot Building, she heads for Bucci Ristorante in Grosse Pointe Woods. “I love the sautéed artichoke-heart appetizer with lemon sauce,” she says. Another fave is “to pick up a sub at Bommarito Bakery [on Greater Mack in St. Clair Shores] and head out on my friend’s boat.” She also loves foraging for morel mushrooms near Boyne City. “It’s the search, the fresh air, and the recipes we think of that make them taste so good.” On Sunday nights in summer, she makes dinner for her family and friends at home. “I spend hours planning on what to put in my smoker,” she says. “The perfect piece of meat, the right rub, and a complementary bottle of wine.”
