Joe Louis & 'Hammerin' Hank' Greenberg, 1935

The Way It Was

Two of Detroit’s sports giants share a light moment as boxer Joe Louis (“The Brown Bomber”) makes a playful jab at Tigers first baseman Henry “Hammerin’ Hank” Greenberg. The year 1935 was a golden one for the Tigers; under catcher/manager Mickey Cochrane, they won their first World Series, trouncing the Chicago Cubs, four games to two. Greenberg, who was named the American League’s Most Valuable Player for that year, led the majors with 170 RBIs and slammed 36 homers. Louis also had a stellar year, defeating such opponents as Primo Carnera (at Yankee Stadium), Max Baer, and Roscoe Toles. Further glory awaited him; from 1937 to 1949, he reigned as World Heavyweight Champion.
