About The List

A Smile Says So Much

You laugh, you cry, but it is your smile that bonds you to your fellow human beings. A smile can make someone’s day. It can be the introduction to a meaningful new relationship. It can diffuse a tense situation.

Your smile is also an indicator of your overall health and well-being. By examining your mouth, a dentist can often detect the first signs of serious disease within your body — including heart disease and cancer. If you weren’t born with a beautiful set of teeth, today’s dentists can fix that through bonding, whitening, and other measures. If your teeth are broken, there are new ways of giving you a permanent working set of choppers without turning to cumbersome dentures. The American Dental Association recommends a checkup and proper cleaning every six months, and dental X-rays annually. This will help to detect any decay in the tooth or between teeth, which is difficult to spot during a visual exam. During these checkups, dentists will also measure your gums to make sure they are healthy and free from any periodontal disease.

So what exactly is the state of your smile?

Have you put off going to the dentist too long? Do you have someone caring for your teeth on a regular basis? How do you find a dentist or specialist who will be in tune with your needs and those of your family? Someone who works with you to develop a treatment plan to enhance, protect, and maintain your dental health? Someone you can count on if you experience a dental emergency?

With several top dental schools in southeast Michigan, metro Detroit is home to scores of excellent dentists, orthodontists, periodontists, and prosthodontists. Knowing that Hour Detroit readers want the best for themselves and their family, we polled dental professionals to help us determine the top professionals in their field. General dentists, orthodontists, periodontists, and other specialists were asked which local dentist they would choose for a member of their immediate family. Once the ballots were returned, each nominee was carefully evaluated on the basis of the survey results, the legitimacy of their license, and their current standing with the Michigan State Dental Board.

On the following pages, listed by specialty, are the results of this survey. A dentist’s inclusion is based on the subjective judgment of his or her peers. While there are outstanding dental professionals who are not listed here, Hour Detroit hopes you will take this opportunity to give these dental professionals special consideration. You’re likely to find something to smile about for years to come!
