Fantasy Wedding Takes the Cake

Jennifer and Shawn Locke, a Clawson couple, wanted nothing more than to be married.

But recent family layoffs were making the wedding “everyone wanted” tough to plan. That is, until the TNT network created the Wedding Day reality series, in which couples are surprised each week with a fantasy wedding.

“We got the call to do the interviews, and [friends and family] just came to our house and brought beer,” says Shawn, a volunteer for Team Detroit, an inner-city youth basketball team. “Everyone was a little camera shy, but it was like we all just came together.”

As the program premieres this month, the show chronicles the wedding of Jennifer and Shawn, who were married at the Westin Book Cadillac, where the reality show enlisted friends and family to help create an Irish cathedral within the hotel. Another local tie: Jennifer chose to wear a gown from Roma Sposa (romasposa.com). The downtown Birmingham boutique provided the wedding gown, bridesmaid dresses, flower girl dress and dresses for the mothers of the bride and groom, says Anna Roselli, owner of Roma Sposa.

“It was just so amazing,” says Jennifer, a Detroit elementary-school teacher. “We haven’t been the luckiest of people. The fact that this show even happened to us is beyond belief.”

In addition to Jennifer and Shawn, Wedding Day features two other Michigan couples. The surprise nuptials of Steve and Holli Holdwick of Saginaw, and Nyk and Jaenelle Jones of Detroit, also are documented on the program hosted by Diann Valentine and Alan Dunn.
