Julie Edgar
Meeting Jack Aronson and George Vutetakis felt monumental for Edgar, a food lover who strives to eat meals made from ingredients grown close to home. She was deeply impressed by their plan — along with chef and charcutier Brian Polcyn — to create natural, preservative-free, packaged meals and stuffed burgers that will have a decent shelf life and an amazing taste. Aronson, owner of Garden Fresh Gourmet in Ferndale, has invested millions of dollars in the technology to make it happen. “Wholesome food sourced locally and hundreds of new jobs? What a great idea,” Edgar says. A freelance writer, she lives in Oak Park with her husband and two sons.
Rebecca Green
When Green got an invitation to create large-scale painted backdrops for The Best of Detroit photo shoot, she was ecstatic. “The best part of my job is that I don’t do the same thing over and over. I’ve never done a project quite like this, so there was a lot of learning involved, which I love.” Green recently received a degree in illustration from Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids. In addition to her commercial work, Green shows in galleries as a fine artist and dabbles in sculpture and stop-motion.
Mathilde Aubier
Aubier, an illustrator based in Le Mans, France, is a jack-of-all-trades, whose inventive universe is made up of a collection of visual finds, textures, and vintage images that she turns into collages full of humor and warmth. She glues, draws, cuts, and brings to life pieces of paper (and pixels) that result in creations bursting with inventiveness. For this issue, she illustrated a story about unexpected causes of liver disease (page 38).
