The alarm clock blares and you're up. When the microwave "dings," you head for the kitchen. And if a warning light comes on, you know it's time to take your car in for service. So when your body sends a signal, why ignore it?
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, men are 70 percent less likely than women to visit a doctor. Whether you tough out the pain, self-medicate that ongoing cough, or just feel embarrassed to talk about your health issues, know that early detection and treatment of disease and injury can reduce your risk for serious health complications and early death.
Metro Detroit medical professionals are here to help you live a better quality of life. To keep your mind and body operating at peak performance, they offer screening tests, lifestyle tips on preventing disease, and customized treatments for health concerns of particular interest to men — like sleep apnea, low testosterone, and pain problems.

Why not ditch the soap for an easy, yet more effective, skin care regimen? Deal with your dental problems and learn how to stop your hair from thinning. More men are looking younger and vital with Botox, fillers, laser treatments, eyelid surgery, and face-lifts tailored to their needs.
The clock is ticking. It's a sign that there's no better time to take care of yourself than today.

Q: I don't have time to deal with my dental problems. How can a new smile help me?
A: "There's nothing better than walking into a room and flashing a big, bright, picture-perfect smile. It sends an instant message: 'I'm healthy, vital, confident, and very much in the game,'" says Dr. Craig Goldin of the Cosmetic Dentistry Institute.
His wife, Dr. Marcy Goldin, an adjunct clinical lecturer at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, agrees. "There's no reason to go through life with crooked, chipped, stained, or just plain unattractive teeth. We offer an array of options to create beautiful, winning smiles that make a lasting impression."
The award-winning Cosmetic Dentistry Institute provides all aspects of general, cosmetic, sedation, and implant dentistry, utilizing the most advanced technology and treatments in a beautiful, spa-like office.
If you dislike going to the dentist or you're too busy, sedation dentistry is a wonderful and effective solution. You can be totally relaxed and have a series of complex dental problems taken care of in just one visit.
"If you're missing one or more teeth, we can replace them with beautiful, state-of-the-art dental implants. These natural-looking implants allow you to smile, chew, and speak more confidently, for a better quality of life," says Dr. Craig Goldin, a Diplomate of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists who has advanced training and certification in IV sedation.
"We provide all phases of general dentistry with the same passion and dedication to excellence that we bring to more complex procedures, so you can achieve the very best oral health possible," Dr. Marcy Goldin adds.
Recognized nationally as the Cosmetic Practice of the Year, and chosen by their peers as Hour Detroit Top Dentists, the Cosmetic Dentistry Institute delivers the highest level of patient care and comfort.
"Everything we do," says Dr. Craig Goldin, "is driven by our pledge to go above and beyond for our patients."

Q: What's wrong with playing through the pain?
A: "Pain is not normal. It's your body's way of telling you that you're either pushing too hard or not stretching and warming up enough. Pain tells you that it's time to slow down and let the body rest and heal, to avoid injury," says Dr. Alexsey Kheynson, D.P.M.
Heel pain is common in men, and can be the result of a torn Achilles tendon.
"It occurs frequently with men in their 40s and 50s, and it's known as 'weekend warrior syndrome.' When an athlete twists improperly and you hear that pop," he says, "it can be a torn Achilles — which requires surgery and rehabilitation."
Dr. Kheynson and his colleagues work with patients to assess the cause of pain. They recommend a personalized course of treatment which can include custom orthotics, physical therapy, surgical intervention, trigger-point injections, or the noninvasive MLS laser therapy to speed recovery and get you back on your feet and in the game.

Q: Are you the one out of five men at risk of possible serious illness or death due to sleep apnea?
A: Roughly 20 percent of American men — about two and a half times more than women — have obstructive sleep apnea. Potential health consequences of this problem include high blood pressure, stroke, heart attack, and potentially life-threatening accidents.
"It's disconcerting to know that up to 80 percent of these people go dangerously undiagnosed. A dentist with expertise in sleep apnea can help," Dr. Mitchell Milan says. "A few simple questions can determine if sleep apnea is likely."
Symptoms such as snoring, gasping for air, irregular breathing at night, tiredness, and morning headaches are the most obvious signs of a possible obstructive airway disorder. Dr. Milan points out that a proper diagnosis of sleep apnea requires a sleep study that, initially, can be done at home.
"Once a patient is diagnosed, the first line of defense is C-Pap, or Continuous Positive Airway Pressure. This device is worn at night and involves a face mask and a hose which is attached at the nose," he explains. "It's very effective, but not always well-tolerated. Compliance is a big problem for those patients."
Dr. Milan says that in all but severe cases of sleep apnea, an easier option is a custom- made, FDA-approved oral appliance.
"This gently repositions the lower jaw forward, which creates more space in the airway to make breathing easier," Dr. Milan explains. "These appliances allow your jaw freedom of movement and are comfortable to wear.
"Some people know they have a problem, but they don't do anything about it. If they knew the solution was easier and less invasive, they would more likely take action."

Q: Will I feel comfortable during a root canal procedure?
A: Our goal is to make patients as comfortable as possible and to reduce their anxiety levels. We educate our patients about the procedure, answer any questions, and, if they choose, we explain the process step-by-step to take away the fear factor of the unknown. With our state-of-the-art equipment, root canal therapy is performed as quickly and efficiently as possible. In addition to local anesthesia, we offer both oral and inhalation sedation so you can be totally relaxed during your treatment. Patients who come into the office feeling very nervous typically admit, after having the procedure, that it was "not a big deal."

Q: What is the modern approach to eyelid surgery?
A: To create a more youthful-looking eye, it's important to address the changes that occur around the eye, from the eyebrow to the cheek.
"A hollow circle in the lower lid, drooping skin in the upper lid, and a lack of volume anywhere within the framework of the eye can make a nonverbal expression: 'I'm tired, disinterested, older,'" says aesthetic plastic surgeon Dr. Mune Gowda.
"To restore a more vibrant appearance, I use a transfer of the patient's own fat to add volume, if needed, under the brow or in the lid/cheek junction. I often reposition the fat to correct hollows and to create a youthful, continuous transition from the lower lid to the cheek."
Dr. Gowda avoids the removal of too much fat and skin, which can lead to a sunken eye appearance. He recommends surgery on both the upper and lower lids to achieve symmetry, giving the very best results.

Dr. Ellen Janetzke
Q: What can be done to reduce my "man boobs"?
A: It's not uncommon for men to feel self-conscious about an excess of breast tissue — a condition called gynecomastia — says board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ellen Janetzke.
"I've seen both younger and older men who were embarrassed at the thought of having to take their shirts off, especially in the summer. With male breast reduction surgery we remove the excess tissue and fat to give men a natural, masculine-looking chest that they don't have to hide," Dr. Ellen says. "Most patients return to work within a week, and what many people don't realize is that the surgery is often covered by insurance."
Men are also coming in for Botox and fillers to reduce the facial lines, wrinkles, and folds that can make them look tired and older than they feel.
"They want to stay competitive in the job market," Dr. Ellen says. "They're competing with a younger generation and they want to look refreshed, younger, and more vital."

Dr. Myra N. Danish, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Q: How can I look younger, but not like I've had work done?
A: Each year, facial plastic surgeon Dr. Myra Danish sees more and more men who are coming in for rejuvenating treatments.
"My injectable Lunchtime Lift™ is really popular with men because they can look 10 years younger in less than an hour, with little or no downtime. I use fillers to put volume back in the cheeks, temples, laugh lines, marionette lines, and hollows underneath the eyes," Dr. Danish explains. "You look natural and masculine, like a younger version of yourself."
No-downtime laser facial treatments help to regenerate collagen, minimize fine lines, and correct discoloration — including redness. Men also are coming in for brow-lifts and upper and lower eyelidlifts.
"My one-hour Lunchtime Lift™ is a mid-face lift that rejuvenates the lower eyelids, cheeks, laugh lines, and jowls. It produces immediate, long-term results," Dr. Danish says. "I customize the face-lift depending on the patient's anatomy, skin type, and aging, so I need to see the gentleman for a consultation."

Cutler Integrative Medicine
Q: What is a common mistake that men make in regard to their health?
A: "Men tend to have a disconnect when it comes to their body. They ignore or suppress what the body is trying to communicate. That's not good for their overall health," says Dr. Doug Cutler, a licensed naturopathic physician. "Heartburn or headaches aren't normal if you experience them every day. Symptoms are signals from the body that say, 'Hey, something's wrong here, we need to explore this.'"
Dr. Cutler goes beyond treating symptoms and looks for the underlying causes of illness. Every patient receives individualized holistic treatment based on their specific needs.
"Even with men who come in and say they feel healthy, I might find they are deficient in certain nutrients or they need to reduce stress for optimal health. It's the same with anything in life — for example, if you want to keep your car running in top-notch condition, there are ways to improve the car's performance and function. Likewise, there are always ways to improve your health."

Q: What are the benefits of laser treatment for toenail infections?
A: In just one 30-minute office procedure, The PinPointe FootLaser can painlessly vaporize unsightly fungus under the nails with no complications.
"Toenail fungus is very common and there has never been a good treatment," says board-certified podiatrist Dr. Arnold Gross. "Your choice has been topical creams and liquids that rarely work, or a pill that has a long list of possible side effects."
Dr. Gross and his partner, Dr. Eric Foreman, are the first to offer the state-of-the-art, FDA-cleared PinPointe laser system in Michigan. Within three months of treatment, patients start to see new growth of smooth, clear, fungus free nails.

Pilates Fitness & Physical Therapy Center
Q: How can posture alignment improve my backache?
A: Poor posture is the primary cause of neck and back problems, says physical therapist and Pilates instructor Ron Jegadeesh, the owner of Pilates Fitness Evolution.
"Most people sit with their head and body leaning forward. Their shoulders are rounded, and they slump or stoop at the computer or while driving," Jegadeesh says. "If you sit, stand, or walk without proper posture, one muscle group works harder and becomes stronger than another muscle group. The stronger muscle gets tighter and lacks flexibility, while the weaker muscle loses strength."
Posture alignment is an integral component of every Pilates exercise.
"When you do Pilates you have a sense of power, grace, elegance of movement, and self-confidence," says Jegadeesh, whose clients include many people who have achieved far better results with Pilates-based physical therapy than with traditional physical therapy.
"The first thing people notice is that their posture and alignment have changed. They feel like they've grown an inch taller. As the sessions progress, they notice improved flexibility and strength." Pilates includes mat work without equipment, and exercises using a reformer to assist and resist movement.
"At each session I also teach exercises that the client can do at home or at work. Getting away from the computer at least once every hour to do postural exercises will help their rehabilitation," Jegadeesh says. "I ask them to make a habit of keeping their body in good alignment as they go about their daily activities. They learn to sit taller, stand taller, and walk taller."

Core, core, core!
Q: If I strengthen my core, will it take care of my chronic lower back condition?
A: The truth is that there are many factors associated with back conditions. Strengthening the muscles that support your spine may help, but the support muscles are only part of the core. More frequently, the situation is that there is an imbalance of the support muscles and a lack of tone of the controlling portion of the core. Most patients are only interested in what I call the vanity core (the six- or eight-pack abs). The more beneficial group of core muscles are known as the Multifidi and Rotatores (posterior core), which control aberrant movement of the spine and help prevent recurring injuries.

Q: How can I lower my risk of early death from heart disease?
A: Keeping your blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose levels in check — and not smoking — are important preventive steps that will help lower your risk. No matter what your numbers are, however, they can be improved with aerobic exercise and a proper diet, says Dr. William Bowman, a family medicine physician.
"A low-carb diet is recommended, so avoid refined wheat products and foods like pizza, breads, potatoes, and pasta. We need to eliminate sugar from our diet, as well. Eat lean protein, low-fat or no-fat dairy, vegetables, and fruits that have a lot of fiber, like fruits grown in Michigan — apples, pears, peaches, plums, and berries.
"We recommend one hour of aerobic exercise three to four days a week, or just a half hour of exercise six to seven days a week. This could be walking the dog, swimming, cycling, running, or working out on a treadmill. Do whatever it takes or whatever inspires you to get out there and work hard."

Renew Hair & Skin Center
Q: What can I do to stop my hair loss?
A: Renew Hair & Skin Center's patented program of FDA-approved, low-level laser light therapy, vitamin supplements, and nourishing hair and scalp products is capable of stopping your hair from thinning, thickening the hair you have, and promoting an increase of new growth.
"The healing light of our low-level laser stimulates cell metabolism and improves blood flow, awakening dormant hair follicles," says Suzie Meklir, co-founder of Renew. "We also offer an FDA-approved, at-home laser therapy device for men who want privacy or for those who are too busy to come to the center for treatment. Being consistent with laser therapy provides the optimal results."
"A thick, full head of hair is a sign of strength and vitality for men," adds Renew co-founder Robin Welford. "We've seen so many men who've had hair transplants and were disappointed with their results. The transplant process doesn't get to the root of the problem in the way that our technology and products do.
"As we like to say, the doctors plant the trees but we can fill in the forest. Even men who had transplants 10 years ago have seen changes with their hair by using our program."
Renew's unique patented program addresses all issues related to hair loss and has helped men and women of all ages — including children as young as 10.
"Our treatment protocol creates the optimal environment for hair advancement," Meklir says. "The worst thing you can do is to wait as your hair continues to thin. If you have hair follicles, we can help you."

Just Breathe of Grosse Pointe
Q: There's a lot of buzz over low T (low testosterone). How do I know if I have low T?
A: A simple blood test can determine whether or not you have low testosterone. In addition, a constellation of symptoms including, but not limited to, generalized fatigue, low energy, weight gain, generalized aches and pains, difficulty sleeping, or difficulty staying awake can all be related to having low testosterone. Taking medication is just one aspect of treating low T. Exercise, eating regularly, drinking water, getting adequate sleep, and avoiding refined carbohydrates and high fructose corn syrup can also help increase your energy and testosterone levels.
As we get older, our metabolism naturally slows and we often gain weight in the belly, so diet and exercise become very important in balancing weight gain versus weight loss. Just Breathe can help by providing a workout regimen that can keep you healthy and active, and reduce the amount of medications you're taking.

Q: Is there a simple, safe, and effective treatment to stop my hair from thinning due to male pattern baldness?
A: Through a program of noninvasive, FDA-approved low-level laser therapy (LLLT), men have stopped losing their hair and have experienced regrowth.
"The sooner you start treatment, the better chance you have of keeping more of your hair," says Carol Wagner, owner of Michigan Hair & Skin Center. "Thinning occurs when hair follicles become clogged with DHT, a derivative of testosterone. Eventually these hair follicles die. LLLT clears away buildups of DHT, increasing blood flow to the scalp, so your active hair follicles can receive the nutrients that are needed to regrow hair."
A one-year program includes special products that cleanse and nourish the scalp, and promote growth in problem areas.
"Clients who've come in early for treatment have had amazing results," Wagner says. "Men continue to produce DHT, so you have to keep on top of it with minimal maintenance. With our in-clinic or at-home options, we make it easy to keep your hair on your head."

Wendy Sadoff, M.D.
Sadoff Dermatology, P.C.
A: What skin concerns are important to men, and how do you help men achieve a healthier, younger, more professional appearance?
Q: Men struggle with skin issues like aging, brown spots, sensitivity, and breakouts, and require a unique approach to solving these problems. I have found that men benefit from understanding how small changes in their daily routine of cleansing and shaving can improve, rather than irritate, the skin. We offer low-maintenance solutions such as using high-quality products that multitask.
Most men will apply sunscreen when golfing or watching the Tigers; making it a daily habit results in a smoother skin appearance — immediately — while preventing blotchiness and reducing the risk of skin cancer. A product that is lightweight, easy to use, and doesn't sting the eyes or feel sticky is essential.
Once the basics are covered, men also want to look younger. Botox reduces deep furrows between the brows, and hyaluronic acid fillers combat the effects of gravity.
Because we understand the unique needs of men, we customize an approach to repair, protect, and improve the quality and appearance of their skin.

Q: What is andropause?
A: Andropause is defined as low testosterone levels in men caused by a natural decline in testosterone production as men age. Commonly undiagnosed and untreated, andropause occurs in nearly 40 percent of men over age 40. Q: I hurt my back playing golf. Can chiropractic care help me?
A: Lower back pain is a common issue for men who "overdo it" on the golf course or with any sport or activity. Sometimes just a sudden twist or turn, or improper body mechanics, causes an injury.
Chiropractic adjustments, using instrumentation or the traditional hands-on approach, can realign vertebrae in the spine that have moved out of place. "This manipulation takes pressure off the nerves and provides very good results," Dr. Duncan Mukeku says.
"Often men will think, 'I'm just going to take a Vicodin and I can probably keep going.' But prescription drugs are a Band-Aid used to treat symptoms — and they can have very consequential side effects," he says. "People don't realize that when you have pain from misalignment in your back or your neck, medications may relieve the pain but they don't correct the problem that causes the pain."
Dr. Mukeku finds that men who choose periodic chiropractic care to keep the body at its peak performance also see improvements in their overall health. "They are able to move easily and have fewer consequences due to chronic issues that affect men as they age — like arthritis in the hips, knees, ankles, low back, and neck," he says.
At Chiropractic Works, treatment is customized for every patient, based on their specific needs.
"We aren't dogmatic in our approach to care," Dr. Mukeku says. "We use different instrumentation and techniques to help people of all ages, from very young children to the elderly. We also carry organic nutritional supplements for prostate health and other health concerns, like sinuses and allergies. If you have any pain or injuries, don't hesitate to call us."
