As Seen on Email!

Readers send us more product pitches than we know what to do with — until now

Published:

We at Hour Detroit receive a lot of requests to write about local products and businesses. We read (and like) a lot of them. In fact, keep those emails coming! The problem is, we don’t always know what to do with so many noteworthy ideas coming across the Interwebs. We ask ourselves: Is this worth its own story? Should it run now or later? Does it fit in with similar products? Sometimes we just don’t know. Consider the following a roundup of things we’ve always wanted to share but simply didn’t know how or when.

Little Zoo Keepers

UK native and Michigan transplant John Chisholm had a stuffed animal control problem. His kids had too many of them. So, at the urging of his wife, he took to his furniture workshop to craft “The Zoo” — a wooden cage designed to store stuffed animals safely and neatly. The Zoo, which occupies 2 square feet of floor space, attaches to the wall and can hold more than 90 plush toys. $157

Bogobrush

It’s “your beautiful, ecological, born in the USA, buy one give one, toothbrush.” So goes the slogan for Bogobrush, John and Heather McDougall’s eco-conscious toothbrush made in Detroit’s Cass Corridor. The sibling duo launched Bogobrush in 2012 after a successful crowdfunding campaign and has since crafted toothbrushes made from bamboo, recycled plastic, and biocomposite materials. $10+

Left-Handed Branded

Left-Handed Branded is Detroit native Scott Tallenger’s apparel and accessories brand that makes use of upcycled materials. The Hamtramck-based business offers an array of unique products including bracelets made from 35mm film, avocado wallets, and his and hers onesies, as well as jumpsuits. It’s a little like the offerings at Ned Flanders’ Leftorium. $25, $42

Jarvis Taylor

Michigan has a smell of its own, and Michigan native Shawn Eddy seeks to capture that in his small batch cologne dubbed Timber Glacier. The cologne is made from natural essential oils and contains aromatic notes of cedar, black spruce, juniper berry, bergamot, lavender, and pink grapefruit. $60
