Remember what mom used to say: “Eat your vegetables, they’re good for you! Don’t forget to brush your teeth! Turn off the TV and go play outside!”

Well, mom was right. Healthier habits can help reduce your risk for developing serious health problems. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, roughly 34 percent of men are obese, 33 percent have hypertension, and only 55 percent of men meet federal physical activity guidelines. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reports that, compared to women, men are more likely to smoke, drink alcohol, make unhealthy or risky decisions, and put o regular health checkups.

You can start taking better care of your health today. Do you have a few minutes? Make a call and schedule a visit with your doctor or dentist. Order a salad instead of fries. Start moving. Even 10 minutes of exercise at a time will do. Wash your hands, wear sunscreen, and don’t forget to buckle your seatbelt.

Need a little help and encouragement? Metro Detroit health professionals have the latest solutions for staying healthy and looking your best.

Q: I have missing and damaged teeth, but I don’t want to wear dentures that can shift or slip and need to be removed for cleaning. Is there a better option?

A: If you’re tired of living with the pain, inconvenience and embarrassment that comes with major dental problems, Teeth Tomorrow Prettau zirconia implant bridges might be the proven permanent solution you’re looking for.

“In the past, patients had to wear a removable complete denture, often for more than six months, before their fixed bridges could be made,” says Dr. Craig Goldin. “With the Teeth Tomorrow technique, hopeless teeth are removed, a set of implants is placed, and customized temporary bridges are securely attached to the implants. Your final Prettau zirconia bridge is made four to six months later, when your implants have stabilized.”

Each Teeth Tomorrow dental bridge is precision-sculpted from a solid block of Prettau zirconia, the most durable, state-of-the-art dental material. “Unlike other bridge materials, Prettau zirconia is extremely resistant to chipping, cracking, and breaking. It’s nonporous, so it doesn’t stain, discolor, retain odors, or attract plaque and harmful bacteria,” Dr. Marcy Goldin explains. “Your custom-made, hand-finished dental bridges are held firmly in place by your implants, so you don’t have to take them out of your mouth.”

“Designed to last a lifetime, Prettau zirconia implant bridges look and function like natural, beautiful teeth and gums,” Dr. David Whalen adds. “It’s a life-changing option that allows you to smile, chew, and speak with renewed confidence.”

The award-winning Cosmetic Dentistry Institute is the exclusive Teeth Tomorrow provider in Michigan. To learn if implant bridges are the right choice for you, call to schedule a consultation.

Q: What are the most popular facial procedures to help men look rejuvenated and youthful?

A: “An upper and lower eyelid-lift is an excellent solution for men who have droopy, hooded upper eyelids, and bags and sagging skin under the eyes,” says facial plastic surgeon Dr. Myra Danish. “In my hands, an upper and lower eyelid-lift is a one-hour procedure with a one-week recovery. You’ll look refreshed, natural, and up to 20 years younger.

“Our no-downtime laser treatments are popular, including laser facials that can make your complexion glow, and help with pigmentation, redness, and fine lines. We also do laser skin-tightening and lifting in the brow, cheeks, and jawline.”

Dr. Danish injects fillers to replace collagen that is lost over time. “I do the injections myself. Replacing the volume in the temples, cheeks, laugh lines, marionette lines, and jaw lines can give a big improvement. The procedure takes 20 minutes or so, and there’s no downtime. The results look natural and masculine, and take up to 10 years off your face.”

Q: How can I shave years off my looks so I can stay competitive in the job market?

A: Dr. Ellen Janetzke, a board-certified plastic surgeon, is seeing an upsurge in the number of men who are coming in for facial and body rejuvenation procedures. Eyelid surgery, laser treatments, injectables, and facelifts can help restore a youthful, chiseled profile.

“Lines, wrinkles, folds, and sagging skin can make you look tired, older, and less approachable. When you look younger, you’re perceived as more energetic, enthusiastic, and capable,” says Dr. Ellen, who takes an overall esthetic approach for naturally younger-looking results.

For men who struggle with persistent areas of fat, Dr. Ellen performs liposuction to create a leaner and more defined appearance. Treatments for gynecomastia have increased tremendously.

“It’s not uncommon for men to feel embarrassed about sagging skin on their chest,” Dr. Ellen says. “We remove the excess skin to give them a natural, masculine-looking chest that they don’t have to hide.”

Q: Can posture alignment improve my backache?

A: “Poor posture is the primary cause of neck and back problems in men,” says physical therapist and Pilates instructor Ron Jegadeesh, the owner of Pilates Fitness & Physical Therapy Center.

“If you sit, stand, or walk without proper posture, one muscle group works harder and becomes stronger than another muscle group. The stronger muscle gets tighter and lacks flexibility, while the weaker muscle loses strength.”

Posture alignment is an integral component of every Pilates exercise. In fact, many people achieve far better results with Pilates-based physical therapy than with traditional physical therapy.

“When you do Pilates you have a sense of power, grace, elegance of movement, and self-confidence,” Jegadeesh explains. “The first thing people notice is that their posture and alignment have changed. They feel like they’ve grown an inch taller. As the sessions progress, they notice improved flexibility and strength.”

Pilates includes mat work without equipment, and exercises using a reformer to assist and resist movement.

“At each session, I also teach exercises that the client can do at home or at work,” Jegadeesh adds. “I ask them to make a habit of keeping their body in good alignment as they go about with their daily activities. They learn to sit taller, stand taller, and walk taller.”

Q: Is there a minimally invasive procedure to correct receding gums?

A: With the Chao Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation Technique, receding gums are typically treated with no cutting, no stitches, and virtually no pain. Periodontist Dr. Joseph Nemeth was the first gum specialist in Michigan to be certified in the use of this minimally invasive technique by its originator and developer, Dr. John Chao.

“When gums recede, your teeth look much longer and your smile looks older. This condition also can lead to tooth sensitivity, decay, and bone loss,” Dr. Nemeth explains. “Using the Pinhole Technique, we make a small pinhole in the gum above the teeth to be treated. Then, with special instruments, we loosen up the gum tissue and bring it down over the receded areas where it should be. This improves the smile tremendously and prevents further gum and bone recession and loss.”

Dr. Nemeth places platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) through the pinhole. A membrane derived from the patient’s own blood, PRF increases the blood supply in the gums, speeds healing, and further enhances the result.

The Pinhole Technique offers many advantages over traditional gum grafting, including no incisions or sutures, less discomfort, and a faster recovery, Dr. Nemeth says. “It’s a great technique. Patients do well and are extremely happy to have a healthier, more attractive smile.”

Q: How can I have a leaner and tighter abdominal profile without having a tummy tuck?

A: Dr. Mune Gowda finds that liposuction, along with the removal of loose skin, is a popular and effective solution for his male patients.

“Most men who come in for liposuction will be left with loose skin that hangs below their belly button and into the pubic area. Typically, I do liposuction on the lower abdomen to reduce the excess fat, and then I remove that loose skin. This will lift up the genitalia and make that area and the stomach look much better,” Dr. Gowda explains. “The guys are very happy with the results, especially some of my older patients.

“There’s no muscle repair and no need to go under general anesthesia. We do a twilight anesthesia,” Dr. Gowda adds. “Recovery is quick — less than a week — which is what most men are looking for.”

Dr. Gowda also offers minimal downtime treatment options that provide excellent results for men afflicted with gynecomastia, the enlargement of the breasts.

Q: Can physical therapy take me from pain to performance on the golf course?

A: Whether you’re an amateur or an elite golfer, the physical therapists at Team Rehabilitation can assess the cause of your pain and develop a plan of therapy for improvement.

“The most common problems we see are back pain, shoulder pain, and elbow pain,” says Steve Scher, MSPT, clinic director at Team Rehab Royal Oak and one of several Titleist Performance Institute-certified Team Rehab therapists. “There are a myriad of therapy techniques. It depends on where you’re hurting and what’s causing it.”

Therapists often work with golf professionals to improve the mechanics of their swing. “A golf pro might say, ‘My client needs more flexibility in his hips,’ ” Scher notes. “We can address any physical problems with whatever the golf pro is working on to optimize the individual’s recovery and get them playing again.”

Elite golfers coming off an injury may seek help to return to a high level of play — increasing their driving distance or lowering their handicap. Doing corrective exercises in the clinic and following up at home can help improve impairments and allow golfers to stay pain-free.

“Don’t stop because you feel better,” Scher adds. “It might be only a handful of exercises, but you need to maintain them to be able to golf weekly or monthly without pain.”

Q: What can men do to take better care of their oral health?

A: Studies by the American Dental Association and the Academy of General Dentistry show that men, compared to women, take fewer preventive steps to maintain healthy teeth and gums. The average male loses five teeth by age 72, and men are more likely to develop oral cancer and gum disease. They are also less likely to brush their teeth twice a day or visit the dentist for regular checkups to screen for problems before they become more advanced.

Your oral health impacts your overall health and longevity. Consider these habits for improved dental health:

  • Brush your teeth with low-abrasive toothpaste at least twice a day. Try an electric, sonic, or ultrasonic toothbrush for more thorough cleaning.
  • Floss at least once daily, especially at bedtime. Use stringed floss, picks, or oral irrigators.
  • Schedule dental checkups and cleanings twice a year, or more if needed. If you are concerned that you may have sleep apnea, ask your dentist for an evaluation.
  • Many medications men use to treat cardiovascular conditions can cause dry mouth. Promote the flow of bacteria-fighting and acid-neutralizing saliva by drinking more water, chewing sugarless gum, and avoiding alcohol, caffeine, and carbonated beverages.
  • To lower your risk for gum disease and oral cancer, avoid smoking and chewing tobacco.
  • Always wear a mouth guard when playing team and contact sports. Wear a helmet when riding a bike or motorcycle.

Crooked and crowded teeth are more difficult to thoroughly clean, and this can lead to sensitivity, tooth pain, and the risk of cavities and gum disease. Proper alignment of your teeth is important for long-term oral health and the optimal function of your teeth and gums.

One simple option for straightening crowded or protruding upper and lower front teeth is the Inman Aligner. This customized removable appliance gently guides the teeth into their ideal position, typically in just three months.

Q: Can chiropractic care help with the opioid epidemic?

A: It’s very important to understand that many people who are addicted to opioids are in pain, and they’re trying to find a solution. It’s also very important to know that there are natural ways to manage pain. One option is to seek chiropractic care.

Chiropractic involves reducing pain naturally by aligning the vertebrae in the spine — which, in turn, reduces pressure from the nerves. This helps to reduce pain and also helps the body function better. Most of the pain in the body from musculoskeletal is caused by pressure from a pinched nerve. If the cause isn’t addressed, the pain can become a chronic condition which may lead to long-term opioid use.

Rather than depending on medications for pain relief, why not call Dr. Ducan Mukeku today for a consultation to learn what he can do to help you? Dr. Ducan Mukeku works with doctors in other medical specialties to make sure you can gain your life back without being exposed to the long-term use of opioids.

Q: What is the benefit of stem cell injections and infusions?

A: Stem cells are the progenitor cells for all of the organs and tissues of the body. They are essential for organ development and repair. Today, tissue regeneration is the new direction of medical care.

The problem in the past has been the source of the stem cell. Now, with the availability of undifferentiated stem cells from the umbilical cord, carefully placed stem cells can regenerate and repair almost all of our organs and tissues. There are no ethical issues with umbilical cord stem cells, and there’s zero chance of rejection. This procedure is FDA-cleared and can be used to treat joint damage, injuries, diseases such as MS, erectile dysfunction, and more.

Q: My baggy lower eyelids make me look tired and older. What type of treatment can fix this problem?

A: Minimally invasive lower eyelid surgery is a no-stich “bag” removal that dramatically improves the appearance of the area around the eyes. Ophthalmic and facial plastic surgeon Dr. Evan Black says outpatient treatment rarely involves an incision in the skin.

“It’s a 30- to 40-minute procedure with local anesthesia and sedation for comfort. Since we’re not cutting or removing any skin, surgery risks are significantly reduced. We also use a fractional CO2 laser to diminish wrinkles, improve the tone, and tighten up the delicate skin in the lower eyelids. After surgery, patients have swelling and bruising around the eyes for a few days to about a week.”

Typically, lower eyelid bags are the result of genetics and aging, but it’s not unusual for some men to notice bags under their eyes at a younger age.

“We see men in their early 30s to their 80s. Lower eyelid surgery is our most popular aesthetic surgery for both men and women,” Dr. Black adds. “It’s a permanent solution that can turn back the clock and help you maintain a natural, youthful look.”

If you’re tired of living with drooping lower eyelids, call today to schedule a consultation with an expert facial plastic surgeon.

Q: What’s the most powerful anti-aging hormone/substance in the world?

A: The answer is human growth hormone and IGF-1.

As men age, levels of HGH/IGF- 1 and other vital hormones decline, leading to hormone imbalance. This increases health risks and causes many unpleasant symptoms, including low energy and sex drive, erectile dysfunction, fat gain, fatigue, and depression. Optimal hormone levels are essential for optimal health and quality of life.

Two of the most important hormones are insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and its precursor, human growth hormone (HGH). Due to its unique, powerful regenerative and rejuvenating properties, HGH/IGF-1 is the only hormone or substance on earth that prevents the deterioration of cells and the decline of the size and function of human body organs that occurs with aging.

Dr. George Shanlikian, medical director of Genemedics, is a national leader in the field of bioidentical hormone replacement therapy and preventive health care. He’s a pioneer in prescribing HGH/IGF-1, and one of a few cutting-edge physicians in the country with the expertise to properly balance these hormones. Fellowship-trained and board-certified in anti-aging and regenerative medicine, Dr. Shanlikian has helped alleviate symptoms of hormone imbalance in thousands of patients through customized programs of bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, nutrition, nutritional supplements, and exercise.

Q: What surgical and nonsurgical treatments are helping men look and feel more confident in their physical appearance?

A: “Many teenagers and men in their early 20s have fatty breast tissue that doesn’t go away after puberty. We do gynecomastia surgery to remove that excess tissue,” says board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. M. Azhar Ali. “Another common procedure in this age group is rhinoplasty surgery, to change the size or shape of the nose.”

Dr. Ali typically sees men in their 30s who come in for the nonsurgical fat reduction of love handles. “Coolsculpting is quite popular. Men can watch a movie or read a book during their treatment, and get a 20-percent reduction of fat.”

Men in their mid-30s and 40s are having liposuction to reduce accumulated fat in the abdomen and breast areas, while men in their 50s and older want to look more youthful and vital. “A lot of men are intimidated by a younger workforce. They don’t want to look old,” Dr. Ali says. “Eyelid surgery, face-lifts or neck-lifts can improve their appearance and self-confidence.”

Dr. Ali offers a wide range of plastic surgery, skin care, and medspa services.

Q: Why is Pain Free Life Centers’ High Dose Laser Therapy superior to others?

A: Pain Free Life Centers is the metro Detroit area’s exclusive practitioner in the use of high dose laser therapy to treat people suffering from chronic pain. No one else has the expertise or experience to deliver the results they do, time after time. That’s because laser therapy is all Pain Free Life Centers does.

The low-level lasers used elsewhere cannot provide the correct power or wavelengths of light for the body to create photobiomodulation, which is the most significant step the body requires to heal. The process increases blood flow and reduces inflammation, which are critical to healing.

You owe it to yourself to experience the benefits of FDA-cleared laser therapy today. High dose laser therapy requires no drugs, no injections, and no surgery, and it has no side effects. Pain management shouldn’t result in addiction. At Pain Free Life Centers, they’re so confident in what they do, your first consultation and treatment are absolutely free.
