Jon Sherer, proprietor of Crust Hand-Crafted Pizza + Wine, and his wife, Karen, say they don’t mind the wait at their favorite Redcoat Tavern in Royal Oak for a burger and salad with the house dressing because of the consistently good food. For special occasions, they head to Phoenicia in Birmingham. “We can never get enough of their house-made sausages in pomegranate juice or the smoky baba ghanoush. And for our entree, the dry-seasoned baby-back ribs — they don’t even need the sauce that’s served on the side,” Karen says. For breakfast, they love Royal Oak’s Café Muse, where they order mushroom scrambled eggs with Boursin cheese and white-truffle oil, or stuffed French toast with mascarpone cheese.

Dan Maurer, executive chef at The Whitney, says he likes to get out to support the good things going on around Detroit, but confesses, “Working a chef’s hours, I don’t really get out as often as I’d like. The most frequented for both food and drink in the last year comes to a tie between pizza and beer at Motor City Brewing Works and sandwiches and whiskey at The Bronx Bar.” For Sunday brunch, he likes Inn Season Café in Royal Oak. On his list to try are Cuisine, Mosaic, Café Via, and Toast in Birmingham. “Yes, I have aspirations to get out and support, [but I] just kind of lack the time,” says the dedicated young chef.
