Their stylish menus are enticing enough to attract a loyal clientele of discriminating diners, but no matter how expert they are, restaurant people like to take a break from their own kitchens for a taste of someone else’s cooking.
Marie Guerra Easterby is the daughter of Gus Guerra, who originated the Detroit pizza at the original Buddy’s, so it’s little wonder she and her family continue the legacy at Cloverleaf Bar & Restaurant in Eastpointe. “My folks, Gus and Anna, used to tell me as I grew up how important it was to support mom and pop places … When we go out to dine, many times we (Easterby and husband Ed) find ourselves at independent restaurants such as The Polish Village Café in Hamtramck, where we always order the Hungarian pancakes and the stuffed cabbage ... and the Zywiec beer!” Another favorite stop is Caffé Far Bella in St. Clair Shores “to see Jack and Karen Palazzolo and get a specialty coffee made by Jack himself and a portabella mushroom panini, and I must get at least two ‘S’ cookies with sesame seeds for dessert, like my grandma used to make.” For carryout, Kim’s Family Restaurant on Long Lake Road in Troy is Easterby’s go-to place. “The food is plentiful and inexpensive, and we love to share No. 10 and No. 17. When we feel like a burger and a craft beer, we head for the cozy Black Lotus Brewery in Clawson, where we split The Shiner burger with caramelized mushrooms, onions, and bleu cheese. I enjoy the Clawtown Cream Ale, and Ed is much more adventurous with his beer choices.”
Jeff Glover, chef at Motor City Meatball Kitchen, is the father of two boys, 5 and 7, so “meals out are an adventure every time,” he says. “Most start with crayons and drawing rather than an enjoyable appetizer, or pre-dinner drinks. With the family, dinner involves somewhere with burgers. Had a good one at B Spot in Rochester Hills recently, on my own, and what a rare guilty pleasure that is.” Glover says “the original Buddy’s has always been very good to me, and I tried Supino recently and was very impressed, and a little too full by the end, which is a good meal I just didn’t have the heart to stop. I haven’t been to Amicci’s in Hamtramck in years, but when a friend told me to go, I had to thank him for one of the best pizzas I have had in Detroit. I need to go again.”
