Bye, bye winter. Hello, spring. As the days grow longer and the sunlight is stronger, we’re ready to come out of hibernation.

Chances are the winter season left us sluggish, as we spent more time sitting, stressing, and filling up on comfort food while cutting back on exercise. Spring offers a second opportunity to make good on our New Year’s resolutions, especially if we strive for a healthier lifestyle.

Restarting an exercise program is as easy as stepping outdoors in the fresh air and taking a walk. Re-energize your workouts by trying new types of exercise, or sign up for a team sport. Spring-clean your diet to limit saturated fats and trans fats, sodium, sweets, and sugar-sweetened drinks. Declutter your mind and banish stress with yoga or meditation. If you’ve neglected medical and dental visits, schedule those appointments as the first step to renewed wellness.

Metro Detroit medical professionals are ready to provide the latest solutions to restore your health and beauty. Are you prepared to bloom?

Spring is coming. Celebrate with renewed health and beauty.

Q: How can I get a great new smile without feeling discomfort in the dental chair?

A: If you could fall asleep wrapped in a warm blanket on a soft Tempur-Pedic cushion and wake up to a younger, healthier, beautiful smile, would you do it? That’s how easy it can be to transform your smile at the award-winning Cosmetic Dentistry Institute.

For people who are apprehensive about going to the dentist, sedation dentistry is a wonderful solution. “You can be completely relaxed while having a series of complex dental problems taken care of in as little as one visit. Sedation also is great if you have pain in areas of your body that make it difficult to sit in a dental chair,” says Dr. Craig Goldin, who has advanced training and certification in IV sedation.

Dr. Craig Goldin is skilled in advanced numbing techniques and dental pain management. He’s also trained to help patients with jaw or TMJ pain, chronic headaches, and tooth pain.

“If you’re uncomfortable having your teeth cleaned, be assured that our hygienists are skilled in the use of laughing gas and local anesthesia for a more relaxing experience,” notes Dr. Marcy Goldin, an adjunct clinical lecturer at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. “Our beautiful office is nearly 6,000 square feet of the most advanced dental technology, along with soothing, spa-like amenities. Whatever dental needs you have, your visit will be efficient and high-tech as well as comfortable and painless.”

The Cosmetic Dentistry Institute provides all phases of general, cosmetic, sedation, and implant dentistry, so you can have all of your dental problems conveniently treated in one office.

“We provide an array of the latest techniques, including porcelain veneers, one-visit CEREC porcelain crowns, Invisalign invisible braces, Fastbraces, and dental implants,” says Dr. Craig Goldin, a Diplomate of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists, which allows him to both place and restore state-of-the-art implants. “Whether you’re missing one tooth or more, we can replace them with beautiful, natural-looking dental implants that will allow you to smile, chew, and speak more confidently, for a better quality of life.”

“If you have multiple dental health concerns — damaged teeth, alignment issues, overgrown or swollen gums — we can rebuild a comfortable, functional bite and a healthy, attractive smile with full mouth reconstruction,” Dr. David Whalen adds. “Through a combination of restorative procedures, you can have the picture-perfect smile you deserve in only two visits.”

The Cosmetic Dentistry Institute is your source for excellence in dentistry, and unparalleled patient care and comfort.

Q: I’m worried about the long-term use of medication for my pain issues. How can chiropractic care help me?

A: While prescription pain medications may relieve pain temporarily, the long-term use of these drugs can lead to addiction and result in dire consequences. Nearly 80 Americans die every day from an opioid overdose. “Chiropractic is the best option for alleviating the cause of pain and allowing you to reduce or discontinue your use of medication,” says Dr. Duncan Mukeku.

“When someone is involved in an accident or uses improper body mechanics, vertebrae in the spine can shift out of place — affecting the discs, ligaments, and muscles. This can lead to sprain or strain injuries, or pinched nerves. With chiropractic adjustments, and using instrumentation or manual manipulation, we can realign vertebrae that have moved out of place. This takes pressure off the nerves and prevents chronic pain issues from developing in the future.”

Periodic spinal care is an excellent way to keep the body functioning at its highest level. At Chiropractic Works, treatments are customized for patients — ranging from infants to the elderly — based on their specific needs. “We provide a range of whole health services and products for optimum health, including therapeutic massage, organic nutritional supplements, and custom orthotics,” Dr. Mukeku says. “If you have any pain, don’t hesitate to call us.”

Q: Can gum disease be treated without invasive surgery?

A: One of the latest treatment options starts with a microscope. Dr. Joseph Nemeth is the first periodontist in Michigan to be trained and personally certified by Montreal dentist Dr. Mark Bonner in his technique “Cure for Periodontal Disease,” a new noninvasive, nonsurgical therapy for gum disease.

“We use a microscope to identify harmful bacteria that are causing the gum disease. We clean the teeth, and the patient uses home care techniques to kill the bacteria and eliminate the disease,” Dr. Nemeth explains. “We don’t have to cut or stitch the gums. It’s really remarkable.”

Dr. Nemeth also uses LANAP laser-based therapy to painlessly treat gum disease, targeting the source of inflammation without removing any healthy gum tissue. “LANAP not only stops gum disease, it’s the only laser cleared by the FDA for the regeneration of bone and soft tissue that has been destroyed by the disease process,” he says.

Dr. Nemeth was the first periodontist in the state to be trained and certified with the minimally invasive Chao Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation Technique, to lengthen receding gums with no incisions or stitches. For patients with a “gummy” smile, Dr. Nemeth recontours the excess gum tissue so the teeth look appropriate and beautiful.

“It’s very exciting that we can help our patients enjoy a healthier and more attractive smile using these ‘ultra’ minimally-invasive techniques,” he says.

Q: I exercise and eat healthy, but my figure isn’t what it was before I had children. How can I get my body back?

A: A Mommy Makeover is a series of surgical procedures that address the common problem areas associated with pregnancy. Surgery is designed to best meet the needs of the individual patient.

“Women with smaller breasts prior to pregnancy may lose more volume. They will benefit from a breast implant,” says Dr. Ellen Janetzke, a board-certified plastic surgeon. “For those who had more fullness, their breasts tend to get droopy and deflated after pregnancy and breastfeeding, so they would require implants and a breast-lift. Some patients just need a lift to restore a youthful breast profile.

“Once they’ve stopped breastfeeding, women should wait one year before having breast surgery,” she advises.

For the abdominal area, Dr. Ellen typically performs a tummy tuck to repair loose muscles and remove excess skin. She may include liposuction of the hips, and sometimes the “love handles,” for a more contoured waistline.

To ensure the best, longest-lasting results from these procedures, women should wait until after they’ve finished having children and are close to their ideal weight. To learn more about the Mommy Makeover, schedule a consultation with Dr. Ellen.

Q: The medication I’m taking to treat vertigo and dizziness makes me sleepy. Can physical therapy help me with these awful symptoms?

A: Vertigo and dizziness are among the common symptoms associated with disorders of the body’s balance system (vestibular) in the inner ear. A customized vestibular therapy plan, including home exercises, can eliminate or lessen the severity of symptoms over time.

“Typically, when patients feel dizzy, they stop doing the activity or motion that triggered the symptom, making the problem worse,” says Team Rehabilitation physical therapist Kara Carravallah, PT, DPT, OMPT, 3 Clinic Livonia. “Based on a patient’s history and test results, we may recommend balance and gait training. We teach the patient how to push through what they’re feeling, so their body gets used to that and eventually those symptoms go away. For some patients, a repositioning body maneuver can provide tremendous relief.”

Q: What’s the best way to optimize and maintain my health and beauty as I age?

A: As we age, levels of all of our vital hormones decline, leading to hormone imbalance. Optimal hormone levels are essential for optimal health and quality of life. The benefits of balancing hormones with bioidentical hormone replacement therapy includes significant improvements in: fat loss, muscle tone, muscle mass and strength, skin integrity resulting in the reduction of wrinkles, energy levels, sex drive, sexual function and orgasms, sleep, memory and concentration, emotional well-being and stability, mood, the immune system, inflammation, blood glucose levels, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, bone strength, vision, the reduction of menopause symptoms, and much more!

Dr. George Shanlikian, medical director of Genemedics, is a national leader in the fi eld of bioidentical hormone replacement therapy and preventive health. Q: I feel self-conscious about my nose. Will rhinoplasty improve my appearance?

A: Facial plastic surgeon and rhinoplasty expert Dr. Myra Danish can reshape and reproportion your nose to naturally fit and flatter your face.

“In the past, rhinoplasties had a particular look, with somewhat of a scoop and a pointed tip. Today, people want a natural look that complements their facial features.

“I operate on patients who have had trauma, have a crooked nose, or have difficulty breathing. I also see people who have something that troubles them about their nose — a large bump on the bridge, or a drooping nasal tip. For those who also have nasal breathing issues — for example, a deviated septum — I will address that during surgery,” Dr. Danish explains.

“My approach is to create facial balance and give my patients a nose that’s naturally refined and doesn’t look like it was surgically altered.”

If your nose no longer suits you, call for a consultation.

Q: What are the benefits of platelet-rich plasma treatments?

A: Platelet-rich plasma (PrP) is a nonsurgical, minimally invasive, drug-free therapy that uses your own blood components — specifically, the growth factor-enriched platelets. Blood drawn from your arm is processed to concentrate the platelets. This solution is injected into damaged tissues to stimulate a natural healing response and promote tissue rejuvenation.

Under ultrasound guidance, PrP injections are used for a variety of joint conditions to repair cartilage, reduce acute and chronic pain, speed recovery, and improve function. PrP therapy can benefit other health concerns including hair loss, especially due to tension alopecia; facial skin rejuvenation; erectile dysfunction; urinary incontinence; and/or increasing libido and enhancing orgasm in women.

Q: My doctor said I need spinal disc surgery. I’ve heard the results aren’t often very favorable. Can I still get spinal adjustments and/or spinal decompression?

A: Yes, you can. Surgery is always the last option. Surgical outcomes usually aren’t as successful as hoped, and often result in a failed back surgery syndrome. While regular spinal adjustments can be very helpful, spinal decompression reduces spinal disc problems so much easier — and, in most cases, in less time.

The spinal decompression table Dr. Stephen Upchurch uses is one of the best in the field. He also uses a McKenzie Repetitive Motion table to help strengthen the spine. Based on MRI scans, he has seen marked improvements in disc issues after treatment. Patients report lasting pain relief without the need for drugs, injections, or surgery.
