Clarkston Cafe and Mr. Paul's Chophouse

A complete redo recently produced two restaurants under one roof: Pizza Coco and its adjoining supper club

Published:

CLARKSTON CAFE: A complete redo recently produced two restaurants under one roof. The casual Pizza Coco is built around an Art Deco mahogany bar and a wood-burning pizza oven. The adjoining supper club, open only in the evening, is done up with tufted high-backed banquettes, mirrors, silk-shaded wall sconces, and black-framed photos of '70s celebrities. The retro feeling does not extend to the menu of fully garnished plates typified by pork tenderloin medallions in a maple glaze with Dijon cream, and filet mignon with sorrel-flavored béarnaise sauce. Some 35 wines by the glass are part of the picture. L & D daily in the pizza room, D in the supper club. 18 S. Main St., Clarkston; 248-625-5660. $22

MR. PAUL'S CHOPHOUSE: This venerable establishment, soon to celebrate its 40th anniversary, is a bastion of red meat and classic restaurant dishes, including such tableside presentations as Chateaubriand, Caesar salad, and cherries jubilee. The founding family still runs the place and emphasizes service as well as a low-lit traditional setting of chandeliers, paintings, and flower arrangements. L & D Mon.-Fri., D Sat. 29850 Groesbeck Hwy., Roseville; 586-777-7770. $24  H C
