Dance Party

Bravo to Hour Detroit for the engaging spread on my husband, Irving’s, and my lifetime involvement with the arts in Detroit [“Keeping in Step,” March 2012]. Writer Monica Mercer patiently listened to my ramblings about five decades of dance and then created a cohesive portrait of an artist at work. Photographer Joe Vaughn superbly photographed Irving’s wooden sculptures. For this, my thanks. And the thanks of the many family and friends who enjoyed seeing the arts featured in the magazine.

Harriet Berg, Detroit


Harriet Berg still looks terrific [“Keeping in Step,” March 2012]. I played music for some of her dance classes at the Jewish Community Center in the early 1960s. She was a great inspiration, introduced me to the music of John Cage and Bela Bartok, and so much more. Her late husband was a friend of my father’s, who owned Garelick’s Gallery on Livernois. Irving Berg had several exhibits there. He was a really great guy. Their daughter, Leslie, was pretty cool, too, but that’s another story.

Harriet Berg was a great inspiration for me [“Keeping in Step,” March 2012]. She cajoled me into being her “everything non-dancer” while I was still a Cass Tech student in the early 1970s.
