Are you ready for the holidays? Family get-togethers, community events, entertainment outings, and travel fill the calendar from November through January. During this busy season of goodwill and gift-giving, be sure to set aside time to take care of YOU.
To stay on top of your health and to reduce stress, maintain your exercise routine and try activities like yoga, Pilates, and meditation. Don’t let aches and pains keep you from the season’s festivities. Instead of popping pills, learn how physical therapy or chiropractic care can get you back on your feet. Stick with a healthy diet and be careful not to overindulge in holiday cocktails and foods that may cause sensitivities or leave you with a 10-pound weight gain in the new year.
Looking younger and more attractive in holiday photos is a snap. Have your teeth lightened with professional whitening. Improve your smile with minimally invasive cosmetic dentistry treatments. Botox and injectable fillers can erase wrinkles, facial lines, and folds, and add youthful volume to your face during a lunch hour. Laser facial sessions can help minimize lines and correct discoloration, including redness, with no downtime.
The holiday season will be merrier and brighter when you look and feel your best.
Q: Shouldn’t I be able to see varicose veins on the surface of my legs?
A: The short answer is no. Varicose veins frequently aren’t visible to the naked eye and must be diagnosed with ultrasound. Symptoms may manifest themselves as leg cramps at night, restless legs during a long car ride, or leg fatigue while standing for long periods. Of course, some people do have visible, bulging veins — but these surface veins are just the tip of the proverbial iceberg.
Sussman Vein is an independent practice dedicated 100 percent to vein care. Dr. Rachel Sussman is well respected for her professional integrity and dedication to continuity of care. Each patient receives her individualized care, attention, and professional guidance.

Q: I’m too vain to spend years in braces. Four months — I can do that! Can I really have my teeth straightened in only 20 weeks?
A: If you’re looking for a speedier way to straighten your teeth, Fastbraces might be the solution for a more beautiful smile in just weeks or months, rather than years. Drs. Craig and Marcy Goldin of the award-winning Cosmetic Dentistry Institute offer Fastbraces for adults, teens, and children.
“Unlike traditional braces, Fastbraces have triangular brackets that allow the roots of your teeth to move toward their final position, starting from the very first day of treatment. Because the treatment time is shorter, you’ll spend less time wearing braces and you’ll need fewer office visits,” Dr. Craig Goldin says.
“Once the braces come off, you typically wear retainers for only 15 to 20 minutes a day,” Dr. Marcy Goldin adds. “Having straight teeth improves your smile, your bite, your overall dental health, and your self-confidence. Especially for people who have avoided traditional orthodontic treatment, Fastbraces is a life-changing alternative. It’s quicker, more comfortable, and more convenient.”
Fastbraces are also available with aesthetically pleasing clear ceramic brackets and a tooth-colored wire. The Cosmetic Dentistry Institute uses Fastbraces and other state-of-the-art techniques, including porcelain veneers, in-office whitening, and natural-looking dental implants, to create the perfect smile you’ve always wanted.
“We restore health, function, and beauty,” Dr. Craig Goldin says. “We offer many options to our patients.”

Q: Could my laptop be the cause of my neck and back pain?
A: “Electronics are negatively impacting our posture,” says Team Rehabilitation physical therapist Scott Delcomyn, PT, MSPT, clinic director/Team Rehab Southgate. “Hunching over electronic devices can cause neck pain, back spasms, numbness, or pain in the fingers, wrists, hips, and legs.”
If you experience any of these symptoms, your body is telling you to correct the problem. “Patients often tell us they don’t have time for physical therapy — but will they have more time after they’ve neglected the problem and need surgery?” Delcomyn asks.
If you frequently spend time hunched over a computer, relieve your back by leaning backward. Repeat this stretch often throughout the day. Bending in the opposite direction of your repetitive movements eases the strain on your overworked muscles.

Q: What’s the latest nonsurgical breakthrough for taking years off your face?
A: Dr. Eric Seiger is one of only a few select physicians in the country now trained in the world-renowned Y-Lift technique — a minimally invasive “lunchtime” lift. The Y-Lift is a nonsurgical, in-office, no-incision, no-downtime procedure with amazing instant results.
Here’s how it works: As we age, the face gradually loses volume. Facial bone structure begins to soften and shrink. We lose our high cheekbones and contoured jawline and chin. This makes the skin appear to be sagging.
Unlike a surgical face-lift, where skin is removed to fit the remaining bone structure, the Y-Lift replaces lost bone and fatty tissue by rebuilding the facial structure with FDA-approved fillers. Dr. Seiger uses a specialized instrument under the skin to gently lift and contour the depressed muscles, fat, and fascia. Then he injects naturally occurring hyaluronic acid, to volumize the face.
“Patients can get an incredible youthful appearance, without surgery, that was never possible before,” says Dr. Seiger, who trained with Y-Lift creator Dr. Yan Trokel. “The Y-lift takes 30 to 40 minutes. It requires only local anesthesia, and the rejuvenating effects last from one to two years. I’m truly in awe of this remarkable procedure.”

Q: If I strengthen my core, will it take care of my chronic lower back condition?
A: Core, core, core!
The truth is, there are many factors associated with back conditions. Strengthening the muscles that support your spine may help; however, the support muscles are only part of the core. More frequently, the situation is that there’s an imbalance of the support muscles and a lack of tone of the controlling portion of the core. Most patients are only interested in what is called the vanity core (the 6- or 8-pack abs). The more beneficial group of core muscles are known as the multifidi and rotatores (posterior core), which control aberrant movement of the spine and help prevent recurring injuries.

Q: How is Pilates beneficial for the pre- and postnatal client?
A: Pilates is a great way for a mom-to-be to gently strengthen and tone muscles, as well as stretch tight muscles. Pilates specifically focuses on the abdominals, back, and pelvic floor, which are important muscle groups to help support the pregnant body. Another benefit of Pilates is that most exercises are easily modified.
“Gentle exercise is important to maintain prenatal strength and flexibility. Pilates helps strengthen the postural muscles, allowing for a more comfortable, pain-free pregnancy,” says owner Ron Jegadeesh, PT, MBA.
After having a baby, Pilates can help you get back into shape. Pilates is an excellent choice if you want to regain muscle tone, correct pelvic floor dysfunction, and improve postural imbalances due to caring for a newborn. Clients generally find that Pilates will help tone and strengthen all areas of the body.
Be sure to ask your doctor or midwife before beginning any new exercise program. It’s important to train with an instructor who is qualified to teach pregnant women. Many of our trainers on staff at Pilates Fitness & Physical Therapy Center have completed specialized pre- and postnatal training. Be sure to tell your instructor that you’re pregnant, and listen to your body. If something doesn’t feel right, stop the exercise and check with your instructor.

Q: How can I look like a younger version of myself, but not like I’ve had work done?
A: Aging is a multidimensional process that includes the effects of genetics, gravity, and lifestyle leading to issues with loss of volume and elasticity. To address aging, facial plastic surgeon Dr. Myra Danish uses multiple treatment modalities that help her patients look rejuvenated and natural.
“Some people require surgery, such as eyelid-lifts, brow-lifts, or a customized face-lift. For other patients, Botox and fillers will be sufficient to address wrinkles and facial lines, and to restore volume. Laser facials are one of the best things you can do for your face, to help with signs of aging like redness, pigmentation, large pores, and fine wrinkles. Everyone can benefit from good skin care. Use sunscreen daily, a cleanser appropriate for your skin type, and a moisturizer with well-researched anti-aging ingredients.
“My goal,” Dr. Danish says, “is to give you time to be ‘you’ longer.”

Q: I’m missing teeth and am embarrassed by my smile. How can dental implants help me?
A: Whether you have missing teeth or ill-fitting, uncomfortable dentures, dental implants can improve your smile and quality of life. Teeth restored with dental implants look, feel, and function like healthy, natural teeth, and can last a lifetime — allowing patients to rediscover the comfort and confidence of strong, beautiful teeth that won’t fall out or loosen while eating, laughing, or speaking.
Dental implants are placed into the bone, which stimulates bone growth, prevents bone loss, and protects adjacent teeth from shifting. A crown, bridge, removable partial denture, or denture can then be attached to the implant.
With dental implants, your cheeks and lips will once again appear full and youthful, and your natural teeth will no longer shift out of position and alter your bite. Imagine feeling happy and proud to smile, eat, chew, and enjoy the activities of everyday life without worry.
Dr. Mindy Salzberg-Siegel has more than 30 years of experience helping her patients achieve beautiful, healthy smiles that enhance their appearance, boost their confidence, and improve their outlook on life. Call today to schedule an appointment.

Q: How does inflammation affect health and beauty?
A: Inflammation is a major cause of aging and poses a significant risk for disease. Lifestyle habits, stress, and external factors (sun exposure, environmental toxins) can be triggers for the inflammatory process. Sometimes, inflammation simmers and silently does its damage without notice, until one day it’s too late. At other times, you may experience abdominal pain after eating foods that cause sensitivities and rev up inflammation.
Stress-induced inflammation might reveal itself as acne, headaches, or joint pain. Sun exposure can trigger an inflammatory cascade and cause damage, such as premature aging, to your skin. Environmental toxins in the air, water, and food can lead to everything from inflammation to hormone imbalance to cognitive degeneration.
To prevent and treat inflammatory problems, Cutler Integrative Medicine/FACE is your wellness and beauty destination. Dr. Doug Cutler identifies and addresses the underlying causes of disease, such as environmental toxins, nutritional dysfunctions, lifestyle, and genetics. Holly Cutler, “skin guru” and founder of the multi award-winning FACE, offers innovative, noninvasive solutions to treat the effects of inflammation — from lines and wrinkles to rosacea, acne, and melasma. Q: How can a smile be improved with cosmetic periodontal surgery?
A: As some people age, their gums recede, which makes their teeth look much longer and their smile appear older. Periodontist Dr. Joseph Nemeth uses the minimally invasive Chao Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation Technique to lengthen unattractive receding gums, typically with no incisions, no stitches, and virtually no pain.
“We make a small pinhole in the gum above the teeth to be treated, and we loosen up the gum tissue and gently bring it down over the receded area. The Pinhole Technique improves the smile tremendously, and prevents further gum and bone recession and loss. Patients are extremely happy, and we’re seeing excellent long-term results,” says Dr. Nemeth, the first gum specialist in Michigan to be certified in this innovative technique.
For patients who have a “gummy” smile, Dr. Nemeth performs periodontal plastic surgery to sculpt the excess gum tissue and even out the gum line, so the teeth will look appropriate and beautiful. Dr. Nemeth performs a minimally invasive lip-lowering procedure to prevent too much gum tissue from showing in patients whose upper lip pulls up high, like a horse’s lip. Repositioning the lip creates a more pleasing smile.
“We love doing cosmetic periodontal surgery,” Dr. Nemeth says. “Our patients enjoy a healthier, more attractive smile and it changes their life.”

Q: I’m worried about the long-term use of medication for my pain issues. How can chiropractic care help me?
A: While prescription pain medications may relieve pain temporarily, the long-term use of these drugs can lead to addiction and result in dire consequences. Nearly 80 Americans die every day from an opioid overdose. “Chiropractic is the best option for alleviating the cause of pain and allowing you to reduce or discontinue your use of medication,” says Dr. Duncan Mukeku.
“When someone is involved in an accident or uses improper body mechanics, vertebrae in the spine can shift out of place — affecting the discs, ligaments, and muscles. This can lead to sprain or strain injuries, or pinched nerves. With chiropractic adjustments, and using instrumentation or manual manipulation, we can realign vertebrae that have moved out of place. This takes pressure off the nerves and prevents chronic pain issues from developing in the future.”
Periodic spinal care is an excellent way to keep the body functioning at its highest level. At Chiropractic Works, treatments are customized for patients — ranging from infants to the elderly — based on their specific needs.
“We provide a range of whole health services and products for optimum health, including therapeutic massage, organic nutritional supplements, and custom orthotics,” Dr. Mukeku says. “If you have any pain, don’t hesitate to call us.”

Q: How does the use of opiate drugs affect one’s appearance?
A: The effects of heroin, oxycodone, and other street and prescription opiate drugs can dramatically change a person’s appearance. Opiate drugs cause both mental and physical decline. Whether a person inhales heroin or injects it, heroin can cause unusual and rapid weight loss, abscesses, cellulite, scabs from picking, and scars from IV injections. Painkillers such as oxycodone cause bloodshot eyes, flushed skin, weight loss or gain due to change in eating habits, and small pupils. Sadly, the changes in appearance rarely impact most addicts and aren’t a motivation to discontinue the drugs, due to the fact that their habit comes before their vanity. Through Rapid Opiate Detox Under Sedation, our board-certified physicians can end clients’ opiate dependence in a safe and effective way, and work toward restoring the patient emotionally and physically.

Q: My vaginal health has diminished. Is there a nonsurgical, no-hormones treatment that will help me feel more like my younger, sensual self?
A: diVa Laser Vaginal Therapy is a quick, in-office, no-downtime solution that safely and effectively addresses a woman’s most intimate health challenges. Dr. Gregory Roche, a double board-certified cosmetic surgeon, is the first health care professional in Michigan to offer this breakthrough technology for vaginal rejuvenation.
“diVa provides two different laser therapies in one three-minute treatment,” he says. “The ablative laser completely resurfaces and thickens the lining of the vaginal wall to increase moisture and to reverse dryness and thinning that can cause painful intercourse. A second nonablative laser heats the tissue to stimulate collagen and tighten the vaginal wall. This reduces laxity, enhances sensation, and can significantly improve or reverse urinary incontinence.”
Hybrid Fractional Laser technology allows the treatments to be customized based on a patient’s needs and desired results. The automated diVa procedure doesn’t require “in and out” manipulation. A topical anesthetic eases any minor discomfort.
While many women experience considerable improvements after just one diVa treatment, the recommended course of therapy is three treatments spaced every four to six weeks.
“diVa has a 98 percent satisfaction rate,” Dr. Roche says. “Quite a few of my patients have come in for the treatment and they’ve been very happy with their results.”

Q: What’s the modern approach to a tummy tuck?
A: Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Mune Gowda combines liposuction with a tummy tuck for body-shaping, so his patients will have a more flattering figure.
“With abdominoplasty alone, the stomach will look nice and flat, but that may not give a good shape and curve to the body ‘landscape,’ ” he says. “If you have ‘love handles,’ the body’s shape will be out of balance.”
Dr. Gowda uses liposuction to sculpt the body all around, removing fat where needed, from the bra line to the bikini line.
“This creates a more attractive shape with curves and contours,” Dr. Gowda explains. “Patients are really happy with the way their clothing fits, especially in the back. They call it a ‘J.Lo’ back. The waist becomes narrow and the buttocks become accentuated because we’re shaping up the areas around the stomach.”
Dr. Gowda points out that the ratio of the waist to the buttocks is the most important part of body shaping.
“Sometimes we do a fat transfer, taking excess fat and adding it to the buttocks. For some people, an increased waist-to-buttocks ratio, like the more exaggerated look of Kim Kardashian, is very appealing. Straight lines are boring for the eye,” Dr. Gowda continues. “Curves and contours are far more attractive.”

Q: I was talking to the owner of a beauty shop during one of my regular appointments and she mentioned how her shop works with homeless children by closing periodically and providing services to children from a local shelter, free of charge. Does this really help?
A: The short answer is yes! Not having a home is traumatic for both adults and children, and that trauma impacts the whole person. For a child experiencing homelessness, this is a disruption that can have long-lasting negative results. We believe that mitigating disruption where we can and providing children with experiences that support and nourish them can reduce the effects of the trauma of homelessness.
Programs such as The McKinney-Vento Education for Homeless Children and Youth work to ensure that children experiencing homelessness maintain access to education — including transportation to and from their school of origin. It may seem like a far reach, but the seemingly small acts that help to keep children connected to their former routines can contribute to their stabilization as they move through what is a very unstable time in their lives.
