“The Star Trek futurism of what can be accomplished in medicine is almost here,” says Dr. Steven Harrington, one of the leading cardiac robotic surgeons in the country. “To replace a leaky mitral valve on a patient and have him playing golf two weeks after the operation, or to remove a tumor inside a woman’s heart and have her return home to Florida six days later with only a 1-inch scar aren’t isolated results. We’ve performed hundreds of cardiac robotic surgeries and, although I can’t promise everyone such success, I can promise [that kind of result to] most [patients].”
Listed as a “Top Doc” by Hour Detroit since 1998, Dr. Harrington saw the remarkable advancements other specialties had made in the areas of minimally invasive surgery, and he became passionate about developing new techniques for cardiac patients. He says teamwork and commitment are the keys. “Robotic surgery requires more manpower than just the surgeon and the robot,” he explains. “I can easily have 10 people working alongside of me. It’s the passion that we share as a team that makes robotic surgery so remarkable.”
