Winter and its bone-chilling temperatures are in full effect, imposing a weekend agenda to be spent indoors. The DTE Beacon Park Foundation and Downtown Detroit Partnership have arranged February Flicks, a month-long movie-festival starting Feb. 2 at no cost. Taking place inside a cavernous heated tent, the “community movie theater” will be equipped with cushioned couches, a blow-up projection screen, and drinks, both with and sans-alcohol, will be available for purchase. The Saturday viewings will include movie-related activities, including kids crafts, trivia, and live performances, 30 minutes before showtime.
Catering to families young and old, the festival kicks off with a 4 p.m. kid-oriented showing of Wonder, a film that follows Auggie, a 10-year-old who lives with a facial deformity, as he enters the 5th grade. A 6:30 p.m playing of Crazy Rich Asians, based on the 2013 novel by Kevin Kwan, is also scheduled for the night. Every Friday until Feb. 23, there will be two showings scheduled for the four-week event. On Feb. 9, coinciding with February Flick’s Family Fun Valentine’s Day, Princess and the Frog and Loving will be projected, while on Feb. 16, March of the Penguins 2 The Next Step and Ready Player One will be shown. On the last night, the festival will screen two award-winning movies. The 2018 Oscar-nominated movie Black Panther at 4 p.m. and Selma, the 2014 Oscar nominee for Best Picture and winner for Best Original Song, at 6:30 p.m.
“We have an exciting mix of events coming this year to Beacon Park beginning with the return of popular programs such as February Flicks and St. Patrick’s Day parties,” says Nancy Moody, DTE Energy’s Vice President of Public Affairs. “Since Beacon Park opened, it has become a year-round destination attracting visitors from across metro Detroit and adding great family-friendly programming to Detroit’s vibrant downtown entertainment.” Beacon Park is located at Grand River Avenue and Cass Avenue in Detroit.
