Opening this week at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD), Pretty/Ugly will feature artwork from children and teens from ages 12-19 in an exhibit that will reflect on self-love. These pieces all share the common thread that beauty can be found in everything, especially in the “imperfections.”
The weeklong event is the first open call youth art exhibition sponsored by MOCAD’s Teen Council. Beginning April 20, this week-long exhibit will explore important topics such as self-image and love from a fresh perspective. “[The MOCAD Teen Council] came up with the topic and description, which is a new take on beauty,” says Michael Koftinow says, youth program producer.
Featured works will include a variety of mediums, including photography, video pieces, drawings, paintings, sculptures, and jewelry. There were almost 200 works submitted by students from metro Detroit schools.
On the opening night, the youth art exhibition will be hosting an opening exhibit of art, music, and spoken word performances by local teens. The is to give exposure to these art forms and also leave an impactful message for all who come to visit.
