While there’s no shortage of Ferndale bars to belly up to for a craft cocktail, finding a decent craft beer — particularly one to take home on a quiet weekday evening — can prove more difficult.

That was the case, at least, until Eight Degrees Plato Beer Company opened on West Nine Mile Road last fall. If the quirky moniker (named after a fermenting measurement) is any indication, this specialty-beer retailer is no typical corner party store. Dark wood display shelves are stocked with an appetizing array of cheeses and charcuterie selected to pair with beer, along with Plato’s own private-label salsas and jams, locally produced candies and snacks, and other beer-lovers’ accessories. Among its selection of available brews is a growing offering of both ubiquitous and hard-to-find Michigan and regional craft beers.

“We’re not a party store, and we’re not a convenience store,” says owner and retired standup comedian Tim Costello. “Not that we don’t like to party and we’re not convenient.”

“Or a store!” Costello’s wife and business partner, Brigid Beaubien, chimes in.

If good humor and good beer are key ingredients to a good night, it’s nice to know both can be found here.

Free beer tastings with food pairings every Friday, 6-8 p.m.
