This foxy lady with the jet-black nose is named Roxie. She shares digs with twin sister, Moxie (3 years old), and big sister, Alexandra (5 years old), at the Detroit Zoo’s Arctic Ring of Life. Roxie and her siblings are arctic foxes, whose thick fur is bright white in the winter to blend in with the snow to protect them from predators. In summer, their coats turn brown or gray, colors similar to the Arctic tundra (their native habitat) at that time of year.
All three foxes came from Assiniboine Park Zoo in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Roxie was born May 3, 2009, and arrived with her twin sister at the Detroit Zoo in April 2010, where they joined Alexandra, a zoo denizen since January 2008.
According to the zoo’s care staff, Roxie is quite a handful. She enjoys being the alpha female, and likes to steal food from her sisters. She’s even been known to pilfer whatever she can from her keepers. Roxie also likes to play “catch me.” No wonder the staff describes her as “feisty, unafraid, super-smart, and crafty.”
Crafty? Hey, she’s just living up to what we expect in a fox.
