The air of fall festivity doesn’t die after Oct. 31. On Nov. 1-2, Dia de los Muertos — the Day of the Dead — is celebrated throughout southwest Detroit. The holiday coincides with the Catholic holidays of All Saints and All Souls Day, and although it may sound like a grim affair, Dia de los Muertos is more a celebration of life than death. Families and friends gather to remember loved ones who have passed, assembling altars adorned with ofrendas (offerings) to honor the departed. Decorations include marigolds, sweets, and ornately painted skulls made of sugar or papier-mâché. The Southwest Detroit Business Association will host The Run of the Dead, which will be held on Nov. 7. The 5K and 10K runs in Southwest Detroit will loop through Woodmere and Holy Cross cemeteries. The run will be accompanied by live performances and other holiday celebrations.
