The annual Ferndale-based DIY Street Fair is marking its 10th anniversary this weekend with a display of work by 150 crafters, a dozen food trucks, and performances by more than 40 bands.
“DIY was created as an answer to what was missing in the area: a forum to gather and celebrate the DIY culture that Detroit was built upon and that has continued to flourish ever since,” says Chris Johnston, co-founder of DIY Street Fair, in a press release about the festival.
Taking place on Sept. 22-24, the fair’s showcase of do-it-yourself goods, which is juried by the festival’s Artistic Committee, will include a selection of fine art, contemporary art, folk art, graffiti, drawings, paintings, sculptures, jewelry, pottery, leather goods, candles, paper goods, caricatures, and more. Detroit Card Co., Rebel Nell, Ori Kami Organics, MI Roots Wear, and Mitten Made are among the metro Detroit-based vendors who will have booths at this year’s fair.
Various breweries, such as Michigan-based Short’s Brewing Co., Griffin Claw, and Woodward Avenue Brewers, and a selection of craft cocktails will also be at the festival. Dining options will include dishes from Slow’s BBQ, Delectabowl, Shredderz, Heros or Villians, and Detroit BBQ. Musical highlights include local indie rock group Bear vs. Shark,; Grand Rapids ska band Mustard Plug,; Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band, an Indiana country blues trio; and Handgrenades, an indie rock group from Hamtramck.
Wine tastings, a cornhole tournament, a new vehicle displays from Chevrolet, and a family-friendly section, featuring Detroit Institute of Art and Detroit Science Center Kid Zones, face painting, and a bounce house, will also be available.
The DIY Street Fair will be located on the east side of Woodward Avenue between East Nine Mile Road and East Troy Street and will offer free admission to all ages.
