When Joe Posch walked away the winner of last fall’s Hatch Detroit project, it was good news for aspiring Don Drapers.

Posch, 42, will use the contest’s $50,000 in start-up cash to reopen Hugh, a store that blends Posch’s impeccable taste in mid-century design with the Mad Men era’s classic bachelor-pad style. Hugh, which had a previous incarnation downtown as a pop-up retail “happening,” will have its next coming as a boutique-in-residence in Midtown’s mixed-use Auburn residential development at Cass and Canfield, set to open later this year.

“Classic bachelor style is about quality,” Posch says. “It’s about enduring style — what’s going to be the thing that you’re not going to be embarrassed to have in five years.”

Although Hugh will aim squarely for the unencumbered male who knows how to make a mean Manhattan, Posch says everyone, even families, can enjoy the store’s well-designed home goods built to last.

Posch recently shared his picks for the best in bachelor style, travel, and taste for 2012.

BACHELOR PAD: Lafayette Towers. “Hands down the best bachelor pads in Detroit are in Lafayette Towers — the west pads facing downtown. Management’s not perfect, but the spaces are.”

HOME DÉCOR: “Color, as far as Hugh is concerned, is always black, brown, and gray. They’re masculine, and great backdrops if you decide to bring color anywhere. Orange was super hot in the early 2000s, then it was pink for a microsecond, then it was red. It all looks great against brown; it all looks great against gray.”

SCENT: Equipage by Hermès. “I’ve been wearing it since I was 19. It was launched in 1972, then reformulated in the early ’90s. I try to buy vintage bottles on eBay. It’s continental — and classic.”

TRAVEL: Hotel Americano in New York’s Chelsea neighborhood. “A perfect example of great, well-executed masculine style that’s accessible to everybody. It harkens to the late ’60s, early ’70s. But the touches are just set in there — they don’t hit you over the head.”

WATERING HOLE: Buhl Bar. “The Buhl Bar is new old-school. They have a classic after-work cocktail hour. It’s a Manhattan or a whiskey-on-the-rocks kind of place. I also like the Caucus Club. It’s got killer atmosphere.”

GLASSWARE: Joe Colombo. “I love his smoked glassware from 1964, which I won’t be selling at Hugh because it’s $75 a stem, but it makes a great picture. I’m a big fan of having a set of glassware for every purpose. When you put a little thought into the presentation, it makes the whole experience better.”
