The Detroit Red Wings Hire a New Coach

Following a series of losses, the Detroit Red Wings fired head coach Derek Lalonde on Dec. 26, more than a third of the way through the season, and replaced him with Todd McLellan, who signed a multiyear contract, according to ESPN. Bedrock Announces Plans for a New Technology, Entrepreneurship and Life Sciences District

Bedrock announced its plans for a phased development in downtown Detroit to create a 14-acre district that aims to become a hub for advancing precision technology and personalized medicine and bio-tech on Dec. 17. In partnership with BAMF Health, Michigan Innovation Headquarters, Ferris State University, and Wayne State University and its TechTown Detroit entrepreneurship hub, the Gratiot Site development’s first phase will begin in 2025 with the 220,000 square foot Life Science Innovation Building. Detroit City Football Club Says Goodbye to Longtime Goalkeeper

After making his Detroit City Football Club debut nearly 10 years ago, the club announced goalkeeper Nate Steinwascher’s retirement on Dec. 17. Steinwascher, winner of the club’s Black Arrow MVP Award in 2022, ended his time in the USL Championship with a save percentage of 75.1% and a goals-against average of .98. “While I may not be wearing the number one jersey for the club, I’m looking forward to contributing to the club and the local soccer community for years to come,” Steinwascher wrote in a statement. First AC Hotel to Open in Metro Detroit

Real estate development and investment firm Roxbury Group announced the completion of the AC Hotel Detroit at Bonstelle on Dec. 19, which is expected to open to guests in January. The 154-room, 10-story structure will include a glass-enclosed lobby bar called the Conservatory, where guests can enjoy cocktails and Spanish small plates, and, by spring 2025, the rooftop venue and the restored 1903 Bonstelle Playhouse will also open. This is AC Hotel’s third location in the state after opening its first location in Grand Rapids in 2019 and its second in Lansing in 2023. They have a total of 132 hotels across the country. Marvin’s Marvelous Mechanical Museum is Moving to a New Home

Marvin’s Marvelous Mechanical Museum announced it will be moving from its Farmington Hills location to 6421 Orchard Lake Road in West Bloomfield on Dec. 9. The new location will be nearly triple the size of its current space, which will close Jan. 5, and offer private rooms for birthday parties. Although they’ve housed coin-operated machines and mechanical oddities in Hunter’s Square shopping center since 1990, the move comes after the Farmington Hills City Council unanimously approved a development that involves demolishing Hunter’s Square and building a new Meijer grocery store. Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan Announces His Run For Governor

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan announced he is running for Governor of Michigan in 2026 as an independent on Dec. 4. “I intend to bring together Democrats, Republicans, and Independents — and our young people, far too many of whom have given up on our political system — together to move Michigan forward,” Duggan said in a pre-recorded announcement video. DBG Detroit’s Youth Program Expands to New York

DBG Detroit’s free out-of-school-time program that’s meant to offer young people ages 8 to 18 guidance through mentorship and individualized support plans will now be available to children in Buffalo, New York in summer 2025. After two years of meetings and discussions, this youth program will be the first to license the DBG model. “From the moment I started DBG in 2007, it was always my vision to reach as many young people as possible in Detroit and around the world,” DBG founder and CEO Khali Sweeney said. Habibi Edition Partners with Shinola

In collaboration with Shinola, Habibi Edition, founded by local entrepreneur Dan Elhosni, launched an Eastern Arabic numeral watch on Oct. 11. The Lebanese, metro Detroit native worked with Shinola’s design team to create an automatic version of the Runwell, which features a blue sunburst dial with Arabic numerals and is inscribed with the Habibi Edition name. A portion of the proceeds will also be donated to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and watch 313 of the 500 available will be donated to their Gala, which will take place on Jan. 25.
