Raising Cane’s Opens First Location in Metro Detroit

Raising Cane’s, a fast-food chain known for its crispy chicken finger combos and Cane’s sauce (made with the company’s secret recipe), opened its first metro Detroit location in Canton on Feb. 4 at 44218 Ford Road. They plan to open a second metro Detroit location in Ann Arbor at 1116 S. University Ave. on June 3, however, the company cancelled their plans to open a third in Chesterfield Township in January. AfroFuture will Host Inaugural U.S. Event in Detroit

AfroFuture, an event sponsored by Bedrock and produced by Detroit-based Paxahau, is coming to the U.S. for the first time at Bedrock’s Douglass Site on Aug. 16 and 17. Attendees can expect a mixture of music performances that feature genres like Afrobeats, Amapiano, Motown and techno, as well as art installations and a marketplace that highlights the creativity of Africa. “By connecting African excellence with Detroit’s rich heritage, we’re bridging the diaspora across borders and oceans through the universal language of music,” AfroFuture CEO and Co-founder Abdul Karim Abdullah said. “This is more than just a typical festival — it’s a moment of unity and a celebration of the power of Africa.” To learn more, visit Detroit.AfroFuture.com.

The Village of Rochester Hills Announces More Events and Retail and Restaurant Openings for 2025

Robert B. Aikens and Associates, owners of the Village of Rochester Hills, announced that this year, residents can expect to enjoy more events and new stores and restaurants in the downtown area on Feb. 11. Some of the events include A Mighty Leader and Little Leader, a wellness and empowerment event, which was originally planned for Feb. 18, but will now be rescheduled for a later, unannounced date, and a visit with the Easter Bunny in Festival Park. Sweetgreen, a health-focused salad and bowl restaurant, is expected to open sometime this spring, which is also when Lululemon is also expected to complete their expansion and reveal a 5,760 square foot store. Churchill’s Cigar Bar Opens New Location in Rochester Hills

Churchill’s Cigar Bar opened a new location in Rochester Hills on Feb. 3. This is the cigar bar’s fourth location since first opening in West Bloomfield in 2010, then Birmingham in 2012, and Grosse Pointe Woods in 2016. Guests can find the new location at 2596 S Rochester Road, which features a 400-square-foot humidor, storing a wide selection of cigars from around the world, 112 private humidor lockers, separate lounge areas for general customers and exclusive members, and a wine cellar and full bar, including over 600 spirits to choose from. Jeremy Renner Coming to Motor City Comic Con

Jeremey Renner, known for playing the iconic role as Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, will be attending Motor City Comic Con on May 17. The two-time Academy Award nominee is also known for his roles in The Hurt Locker, The Town, Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Mayor of Kingstown, and Arrival. Attendees of the comic convention, established in 1989, will also have the chance to meet Katelyn Barr, the voice of Himeno in Chainsaw Man, Sean Astin, who played Samwise Gamgee in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and more. Fred Durhal III Announces Run for Detroit Mayor

Fred Durhal III, Detroit City Council Member for the 7th  District, announced his run for Detroit mayor at the Boys and Girls Club of Southeastern Michigan on Jan. 29. As mayor, Durhal said he would focus on expanding opportunities to youth and children, bringing developments and jobs to every neighborhood, and strengthening local neighborhoods by expanding crime-prevention and safety programs and promoting walkable commercial corridors. “As mayor, I’ll fight hard and work tirelessly, as I’ve done my whole life, to make Detroit a place where everyone gets a fair shake, no matter their ZIP code – where we keep our promises to ourselves and to each other, so everyone can thrive with pride and dignity,” Duhal said. Michigan Democratic Senator Gary Peters Will Not Run for Reelection

After only two terms in the Senate, Gary Peters said he won’t seek reelection in 2026 on Jan. 28, according to the Associated Press. This is the second time since the last election cycle where democrats will have to defend an open Senate seat in Michigan. Former U.S. transportation secretary Pete Buttigieg, who moved to Traverse City in 2022, is considering running for the Senate in Michigan, but has also expressed an interest in becoming his party’s next presidential nominee, which he attempted in 2020. Buttigieg ended up conceding and endorsing former President Joe Biden, believing he had the best chance at defeating now-President Donald Trump.

Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice to Step Down

Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Elizabeth Clement announced on Feb.19 that she will be stepping down from the court by April 30, according to the Detroit Free Press. Appointed by former Gov. Rick Snyder in 2017, her departure will allow Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to appoint her replacement and expand the Democrat’s majority of nominated judges to 6-1. Clement will be taking on a new position as president of The National Center for State Courts (NCSC) this spring, which, according to its website, serves as a central resource for the state courts. “I look forward to building on NCSC’s strong services as we strengthen judicial systems across the country and the world, enhancing accessibility, transparency, and efficiency,” Clement said in a statement provided by NCSC.
