Local Detroit Retailers1943

In the 1940s, fashionable and elegant Detroit women had a bevy of high-end retailers where they could indulge in their taste for haute couture. Uptown in the New Center area, there was Saks Fifth Avenue, at Second and Lothrop, and Julie, in the Fisher Building. Downtown, in addition to the department stores, there were such chic shops as Russeks, Himelhoch’s, Kline’s, Sax Kay, B. Siegel, and D.J. Healy. Healy’s flagship store was on Woodward, just south of Grand Circus Park, but it also had several neighborhood shops, including this one at Jefferson and Chalmers, on Detroit’s east side. According to Polk’s 1938 Detroit City Directory, there were nine D.J. Healy locations: downtown Detroit, Dearborn, Highland Park, Birmingham, and five stores in the city — Six Mile and Gratiot; Grand River and Southfield; Cass at West Grand Boulevard; Six Mile and San Juan; and the East Jefferson location. Founded in the 1870s, D.J. Healy also sold fine art for several years. Like so many retailers that once defined Detroit, it has vanished from the shopping scene.
