AfroFuture Detroit Announces Headliner and Full Lineup

AfroFuture, a vibrant music festival highlighting African talent that’s making its U.S. debut in Detroit this summer, unveiled their full music lineup on April 23. The two-day event, which will take place Aug. 16-17 at Bedrock’s Douglass Site, will start off hot on Saturday with Asake, a Nigerian singer and songwriter who, in 2022, released Mr. Money with the Vibe the highest-charting Nigerian debut album in Billboard history. Davido, a singer, songwriter, and producer also from Nigeria who has produced hits featuring huge stars like Nicki Minaj and Chris Brown, will open the show on Sunday night. The White Stripes Announced as Inductees into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

The White Stripes are among seven acts who will be inducted into The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame this year. The live announcement was made on April 27, during an episode of American Idol. The Grammy-award winning band, comprised of Jack White and Megan White, formed in Detroit in 1997 and disbanded in 2011. They are being recognized in the performer category alongside Bad Company, Chubby Checker, Joe Cocker. Cyndi Lauper, Chubby Checker, Joe Cocker, Bad Company, Outkast, and Soundgarden. Bedrock Reveals New Event Spaces Inside Hudson’s Detroit

Over 56,000 square feet of various event spaces across three floors opened at Hudson’s Detroit on April 2. Known as “The Department,” 15 rooms of different sizes are available that can accommodate parties ranging from six to 2,000 people. James Beard Award Winner Closes Restaurant in Clawson

After nearly five years in business, Chef-owner Hajime Sato closed Sozai, a restaurant that earned him a spot on Bon Appetit’s best new restaurant list in 2022 and a James Beard Award for Best Chef: Great Lakes in 2024, on April 26. In an Instagram post, Sato said that following a period of reflection, he has decided the best thing for his family is to return to the Pacific Northwest. “It will be extremely difficult to leave Sozai behind,” Sato wrote. “I put everything I had into building something special for my customers and to further my work as a sustainable seafood advocate. Free People Opens Location in Downtown Detroit

Free People, a boutique that offers everything from baggy denim to lacey sets and platform sandals, opened a second metro Detroit location in downtown Detroit on April 25. Cosm Breaks Ground in Downtown Detroit

Cosm, an immersive sports and entertainment venue, broke ground in downtown Detroit, at the corner of Monroe Street and Campus Martius, on April 17. The 70,000-square-foot venue is expected to open by mid-2026 and feature an 87-foot diameter LED dome made of thousands of LED modules that are individually installed to create a uniform display that Cosm calls CX Display. Powered by CX Engine, it has spatial audio capabilities and can generate high-quality resolution, brightness, and contrast to make it feel as though you’re watching a sports game in-person. “[Dan Gilbert] showed me Cosm, and I had never seen anything like it,” Duggan said. “… We are going to create another destination that people are going to come from all over — one more reason to come down to the city of Detroit.” To learn more, visit cosm.com.

Affordable Housing Units Open Near Corktown

Community Developer MiSide and the city of Detroit celebrated the opening of Campbell Street Apartments with a ribbon cutting ceremony on April 17. The $18 million development brings 40 units of affordable housing to residents who, with the help of project-based vouchers, will not have to pay more than 30% of their income. Located at 5800 Michigan Ave., the development is minutes away from Michigan Central Station and offers one-to-three-bedroom units that are furnished and designed with hardwood floors. A community center, laundry facility, and gated on-site and off-site parking are available. The second phase of construction will provide 32 more units of affordable housing at the Wesson Apartments, which is expected to open in about 19 months. To learn more, visit detroitmi.gov.

Global Citizens and Bedrock Partner to Bring Action Summit to Detroit This July

Global Citizens, the international summit driving action to end extreme poverty, and Bedrock have teamed up to highlight the city’s efforts to invest in its people during the first-ever Global Citizen NOW: Detroit event, which will be held at Hudson’s Detroit, July 8-11, and includes “action-oriented sessions that explore Detroit’s dynamic evolution, driven by the collective efforts of private, public and philanthropic sectors.” It will also feature announcements on upcoming impact initiatives.
