During the final game of the series on March 29, the Tigers jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning but lost that lead by the second, according to the Detroit Free Press. Detroit City FC Draws Against Birmingham Legion FC at Home Opener
With goals from Darren Smith and Ben Morris in the first half, Detroit City FC led the first home match of their season 2-1 against Birmingham Legion FC on March 22. However, an own goal by City captain Stephen Carroll in the second half tied the match 2-2. Their next home match is on April 5 against Monterey Bay F.C. at Keyworth Stadium in Hamtramck. Detroit Journalist Luther Keith Dies at 74
Luther Keith, who was inducted into the Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame in 1995, passed away at the age of 74 on March 5. Among his many firsts, Keith was the first Black newsroom editor at the Detroit News in 1982. Prior to his induction, he founded Wayne State University’s Journalism Institute for Minorities, and later, Arise Detroit, a nonprofit coalition dedicated to connecting the community by promoting volunteerism. Keith was also a well-known blues guitarist who regularly played at Baker’s Keyboard Lounge in Detroit. “Luther is a Detroit treasure, a Detroit legend,” Mark S. Lee, a longtime friend, told The Detroit News. “… His column was a must-read, and he paved the way for many others in the industry in Detroit and beyond. I think he will be remembered for his love of Detroit, for giving back to the city and for trying to pave the way for others. He was a trailblazer.”
First Black-owned Brewery to Open in Detroit
Roar Brewing Co., a veteran- and Black-owned brewery, held a soft opening in Midtown at 666 Selden on March 23. Billed as the first Black-owned brewery to open in Detroit, Evan Fay, who is also the owner of café Noir and Chloë Monroe Galleries, says he hopes to create an inviting and relaxed space for people to connect. “When I was in the military and stationed in Wyoming, I would visit breweries in Fort Collins, and I realized they weren’t just places to grab a drink — they were community hubs,” said Fay in a press release. “That’s exactly what I want Roar Brewing Co. to be: a space where people come together, whether it’s to watch a game, have a conversation, or experience craft beer for the first time.” They hope to have their grand opening by summer 2025. Hudson’s Detroit Completes Glass Facade
The final glass panel was installed on the Hudson’s Detroit tower exterior on March 4, nearly a decade after construction began in 2017. Complete with 4,677 panels, construction is ongoing at the 1.5 million-square-foot site, and according to Bedrock, the tower will house The Detroit Edition hotel and The Residences at The Detroit Edition. According to the Detroit Free Press, the 12-story building is expected to be completed by April and the 49-story building, after being granted a one-year extension by DDA board members, is expected to be completed by Dec. 31. Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan Delivers Final State of the City Speech
Mayor Mike Duggan delivered his last State of the City address inside Hudson’s Detroit on March 25. It was the first major event held at the new skyscraper, according to Fox 2 Detroit. In his speech, he praised collaborations that have led to a decrease in crime and an increase in manufacturing jobs and investments in neighborhoods and looked back at his time overseeing the city as it exited bankruptcy. “The University of Michigan just found that homeowners in Detroit have gained $4.6 billion in wealth in the last ten years,” Duggan said in his speech. “If you stuck and stayed, you got the most benefit.” Rather than seeking re-election as Detroit mayor, Duggan will be running for governor of Michigan as an independent in 2026. James Craig Announces Run for Detroit Mayor
James Craig, who served as Detroit Police Chief from 2013 to 2021, announced his run for Detroit mayor at Executive Cuts & More, a Black-owned barber shop in Detroit, on March 12. As a Republican who has endorsed President Donald Trump several times, Craig believes this will help him with obtaining resources for Detroit, according to BridgeDetroit. “If you look across the country, I don’t know how many mayors will have the ability to touch this administration,” he said. Craig ran as a Republican for governor in 2022 but was eliminated off the primary ballot after state officials discovered he had submitted falsified signatures.
