Chiropractors Offer First Line of Defense Against Back Pain
Last year, the opioid epidemic in the United States was declared a public health emergency. With its roots often traced to overuse of painkillers for chronic pain, the crisis prompted the American Chiropractic Association to issue a statement that included the following:
“Back pain, in particular, has been identified as one of the most common reasons why primary care physicians prescribe opioids, despite the fact that a 2016 review and meta-analysis of relevant research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association reveals that these drugs are essentially ineffective for treating chronic low-back pain. This year, the American College of Physicians released updated low-back pain treatment guidelines that promote the use of noninvasive, nondrug approaches to treatment as a first line of defense against back pain.”
Research continues to show that chiropractic care is a clinically effective, drug-free method of reducing back pain, neck pain, and headaches. Chiropractors provide patient-centered care, which involves taking the time to discuss the problem and get to its root.
Chronic pain is a symptom of dysfunction, often stemming from weak core muscles, joints that are stressed, or repetitive harmful movements. Medication masks symptoms, and while it may temporarily reduce pain, it doesn’t address the cause. As such, it can eventually lead to overreliance and drug abuse. Injuries that lead to chronic pain are within the scope of a chiropractor’s practice, and this type of care often outperforms many traditional treatments. The metro Detroit area has many skilled chiropractors who are ready to help their patients control chronic pain.
