“The difference in tummy tucks of 10 years ago and tummy tucks today is like the difference between night and day. Today’s tummy tucks are done in combination with liposuction,” says Dr. Mune Gowda, a board-certified plastic surgeon, a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. He is on staff at Ascension Providence Novi and Beaumont Royal Oak Hospital.
“A liposuction of upper hip rolls and folds in the back, performed simultaneously with the tummy tuck, can transform a shapeless body into a nicely curved one. Tummy tucks are no longer just a matter of flattening the stomach,” Dr. Gowda explains, “you have to look at the entire body like a landscape. In most circumstances, a tummy tuck alone cannot bring the change to the waist women are seeking. And when women choose localized liposuction [without the tummy tuck], it’s like spot-welding. That may lead to suboptimal results.”
The benefits to this new approach are many; it improves the abdomen while enhancing the buttocks, thighs, and back. With this dual approach of liposuction and a tummy tuck, Dr. Gowda’s patients receive the best outcome possible. He is known for the attention he gives to even the most minute detail, and this attention to detail – in addition to his patience and precision – are Dr. Gowda’s trademarks.
Dr. Gowda began his practice more than 35 years ago, specializing in the intricate fields of hand surgery and microsurgery. “I strongly believe that my background in microsurgery and the delicate techniques involved in reconstruction heightened my surgical skills,” he says. “The precision demanded by microsurgery serves me well with my patients today.” Dr. Gowda performs many facial and body procedures including face and eyelids, rhinoplasty, abdominoplasty, body lifts, liposuction, and breast augmentation and reduction. In addition, he performs nonsurgical, minimally invasive procedures in his Novi and Troy offices, after which patients are able to get on with their everyday activities with little or no downtime.
Dr. Gowda uses Botox, Newtox and filler materials such as Juvederm and Restylane to achieve a smoother and more youthful facial appearance. Cosmetic fillers restore volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, while Botox and Newtox relax muscles that cause facial wrinkles. In some situations, the use of both types of injectables in tandem can postpone the need for facial surgeries. Both of Dr. Gowda’s offices also provide additional non-surgical aesthetic treatment options: High-quality Laser Hair Removal, Wrinkle Reduction, Microdermabrasion, Chemical Peels, Skin Tightening, Skin Rejuvenation, state of the art Laser Treatments, and other custom medical-grade skincare services are available for patients at both locations.
When choosing a plastic surgeon, it is important to verify a potential physician’s board-certification and hospital privileges. A qualified plastic surgeon should guide the patient toward the most appropriate procedure – in other words, the one that best suits her needs.
“Not everyone’s face or body is the same. I won’t do a cookie-cutter operation,” Dr. Gowda says. “Every man and woman is unique; they have unique life experiences, unique needs and expectations. All of this comes into play in choosing not only specific procedures, but the surgeon who will perform them. I really enjoy what I do, and I like to see my patients happy after surgery.”
