Fat Tuesday, also known as Pączki Day, is right around the corner, and Detroit City Distillery is celebrating by bringing back their limited-edition Pączki Day Vodka for its seventh year.
The vodka, which is expected to sell out quickly, is made with fresh raspberry Pączkis from New Palace Bakery in Hamtramck. The pączkis are distilled in 100 percent potato vodka from Poland and Michigan in a 500-gallon copper pot still.
“There are only two ingredients: vodka and pączki. There are no artificial ingredients, flavors, or sweeteners that you find in mainstream flavored vodka,” Michael Forsyth, a co-owner of Detroit City Distillery said in a press release.
“The goal is to make a true craft spirit that highlights the taste of these perfectly handmade, glazed raspberry pączki from Hamtramck. It’s like a Pączki Day Party in a bottle.”
When the vodka is complete, it is 88 proof and delivers a “smooth” and “buttery” flavor with a raspberry finish perfect to be served over ice or mixed in a cocktail.
Detroit City Distillery’s Pączki Day Vodka will go on sale in the distillery’s online shop on Friday, Jan. 26 — the same day their Orange cream vodka goes on sale — at 8 a.m. for $35 a bottle. A public party to celebrate its release will happen on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 10 a.m. at Eastern Market’s tasting room, located at 2462 Riopelle St., Detroit.
Detroit City Distillery plans to shut down Riopelle Street during the Pączki Day Party to fill the streets with live music, special cocktails, and even a block-long shot ski.
“It’s been incredible to see Pączki Day Vodka become a tradition within Michigan’s Polish community and watch the sensation grow nationwide,” Forsyth added. “People travel from all over America to get their hands on this once-a-year spirit and celebrate with their Polish comrades. It’s a special thing when a spirit brings people together.”
