Last year, Detroit City Distillery sold out of its Pączki Day Vodka in 22 minutes. Those hoping to get their hands on the popular, limited-edition spirit this year will have the chance to do so when it goes on sale at 8 a.m. on Feb. 11.
“The level of excitement and demand for this product never ceases to amaze me. It’s always a huge challenge to work around the clock to try to make enough, but we have so much fun doing it,” says Michael Forsyth, co-owner of Detroit City Distillery, in a press release. “Due to requests already pouring in, we anticipate yet another fast sellout in 2022.”
Detroit City Distillery is teaming up with New Palace Bakery once again on its Pączki Day release. The distillery is using more than 3,000 glazed raspberry pączki from the Hamtramck business. Each batch of the vodka uses 18 dozen freshly baked pączki, which are soaked in a 500-gallon copper pot with 100 percent potato vodka before being distilled.
“There are only two ingredients: vodka and pączki,” Forsyth says. “There are no artificial ingredients, flavors, or sweeteners that you find in mainstream flavored vodka. The goal is to make a true craft spirit that highlights the taste of these perfectly handmade, glazed raspberry pączki from Hamtramck. This year, we blended potato vodka straight from Poland with Michigan potato vodka to create a perfect blend that embodies what this spirit is all about. At 88 proof, it’s ultra-smooth, and you can really taste the raspberry and buttery pastry of the pączki.”
The vodka, which is $35 per bottle, will be sold at select liquor stores and on the Detroit City Distillery website. Online orders can be picked up at the Detroit City Distillery tasting room, located at 2462 Riopelle St. in Eastern Market, from Feb. 18-25.
To celebrate this year’s release, Detroit City Distillery will also host a Pączki Day Party at its tasting room from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Feb. 26. The free event will feature Polish music, food, and of course, Pączki Day Vodka.
