A veteran- and Black-owned brewery, Roar Brewing Co. is planning its soft opening this Sunday, March 23, in Midtown. But it won’t just be any Sunday: the annual Marche du Nain Rouge parade will be marching by on the same day.

Billed as the first Black-owned brewery to open in Detroit, Roar Brewing Co. is the latest concept from local entrepreneur Evan Fay, who also owns Café Noir and Chloë Monroe Galleries on the city’s North End. With his latest establishment, Fay says he intends to create an inviting and unpretentious space for people to socialize.

“When I was in the military and stationed in Wyoming, I would visit breweries in Fort Collins, and I realized they weren’t just places to grab a drink — they were community hubs,” said Fay in a press release. “That’s exactly what I want Roar Brewing Co. to be: a space where people come together, whether it’s to watch a game, have a conversation, or experience craft beer for the first time.”

Its house-brewed offerings include a flagship Honey Oat Stout, along with its Roar Pilsner, Roar Wheat Beer, and Roar Saison. The company describes these selections as “Great-tasting beer without overcomplicated branding or niche exclusivity.”

Roar Brewing Co. plans to host watch parties for Detroit sports team games, live music, and other social events. It also plans to feature weekly interactive tours that give visitors an inside look at Roar’s brewing process and knowledge about the history of the craft in Detroit.

The space, located at 666 Selden, previously housed Nain Rouge Brewery and features an outdoor plaza, along with a three-and-a-half seasons room reserved for special events and overflow seating.

After the soft opening, Roar is planning its grand opening for summer 2025. For more information, visit roar.beer.
